Is this the cause of bad MPG for 5th Gen?

Could the Aerodynamics of the 4Runner be a big part of the poor mileage? So, I just happened to wash my 4Runner and Chevy Express Van one morning before heading out on a 60 mile trip down the Freeway at 75 MPH with the Wife following in the 4Runner. When I got to the destination We backed in to park side by side and My van was still clean as a whistle and the 4Runner was wiped out with BUGS! We were doing the same speed and side by side or with Her behind Me yet the shape of the Toyota just splattered every bug on the road! Also, the van gets 18 mpg loaded with 800 lbs of tools and is 3/4 ton V-8. 4Runner gets 18 mpg as well. It seems the Runner has the qualities of a flying BRICK!

The aerodynamics of a refrigerator on its side, 5 speed transmission, final drive ratio, gearing, and heavy drivetrain and wheels makes for a charming but not fuel efficient transport!

Try driving across the Everglades at night... I feel like my 4runner was designed to eradicate Zika.

The shape of the 4Runner is more truck-like than car-like, and that's fine with me.

Only 800# of tools?! You need more tools in your life!
We recently took a high speed trip for 200+ miles and yeah now it’s plastered with winged corpses. I used to drive a 1ton express fully loaded for work, maybe the van just makes a better wedge into the wind, but also catches cross wind like a sail boat as I’m sure you know

My 96 F-350 would be plastered with bugs after driving, so many it would be slimy, lol.

I do not find the 4runner too bad really in comparison.

But same with the headlight thing, I think they are the best headlights on any car I have owned, whereas many think they are horrible.

Hopefully we're done with the damn things for this spring. Unusually bad year in central Florida. I keep one those cheap HF pressure sprayers hooked up for the whole month, and just hit my trucks as soon as I get home. Don't let the sun hit em for a couple hours, you'll be scrubbing for hours and have a truck that looks like a sick Dalmation.
As far as aerodynamics? I think a shipping container might be a little better than my T4R. With an aftermarket bumper and mud terrain knobbys catching all the air underneath, my mileage dropped 2 miles per gallon at least.

I might be older but I drive my 4runner 50 miles round trip everyday, 80% at highway speed (at the posted speed limit!) and so far two weeks owning it I am averaging over 22 mpg which is just a little better than my FJ.

We just got back from British Columbia. Our journey back took us through Iowa where both the 4-Runner and fiberglass trailer we were towing were hammered by bugs. Had to stop every 200 miles or so to clean them off the windshield. I've never seen anything this bad and I was raised off of Chrome Avenue in Miami back in the day when there was nothing out there! The front of the 4-Runner and the tow - a brand new fiberglass trailer were trashed with bugs. I wanted to avoid using anything more abrasive than a micro fiber sponge. What did the trick was this product called "Bugs N All". Spray on. Wait 30 seconds and sponge off. Wow. Something that actually works as advertised. Still haven't figured out what the deal is with Iowa...

I’m averaging 21mpg after 8 months on my stock 2019 OR. Guessing you drive with a light foot like I do. I accelerate slowly if there’s nobody behind me. I think that makes a big difference.

Some have said it has the aerodynamics of a brick.
or
It looks like a rhinoceros on wheels.

Had mine over 6 years, plan to enjoy it for many more.

I guess it's an airflow thing......The van windshield gets dirty while the front stays clean, while the windshield is spotless and the front is a mess on the 4Runner?!
