Baja Designs | Squadron SAE | Pre-Order!!!

Brand new for Baja Designs is our SAE certified light. This light is based on our Squadron series. While there are many visual characteristics that stayed the same the pattern, and circuitry is optimized in order to give our SAE light a street legal punch! We’ve put this light through rigorous tests to ensure that it would be an upgrade from most LED, HID, and Halogen factory fog lights.

Squadron SAE, Pair, PRE-ORDER

These lights are also available in Vehicle Specific Kits for some of our most popular applications. Check out the following SAE approved options:

Toyota:
- 07-13 Tundra, 05-11 Tacoma | SAE Fog Pocket Kit
- 12+ Tacoma, 14+ Tundra, 10+ 4Runner | SAE Fog Pocket Kit

GM/Chevy:

I just read this info regarding sae/dot, so do these fog lights need to be dot approved also to make them legal to use on public streets?

What are DOT & SAE approved LED lights? – Radiant LED Lighting Solutions

Been wanting to get a pair of your fog lights for awhile now. Only want them if they truly legal to use on the streets.

Yes. You can sort of get away with running other fogs but they aren't technically legal. I have the Baja Squadron Sports and they are way too bright for street legal use. With these the DOT/SAE approval means they are street legal.

Not brightness. Beam pattern.

I am pretty happy with my Philips LED fogs but these are so cool...

What is changing the pattern of the light, is it the lens, or something else? I'd feel better about using the Squadron Sports more regularly at night if there was a more controlled beam pattern that kept the light from shining too high. If it's controlled by the lens, will it be interchangeable for the people who already have the Squadron Sports, or even the Pros?

The entire reflector housing is different, meaning that a lens swap won't accomplish anything.

You shouldn't be using standard squadrons at all on the road. They are an off-road only light. These SAE fogs have an appropriate beam pattern and cutoff for on-road and inclement weather light.

BD mentioned that they might offer some sort of trade-in or discount offer, but nothing finalized yet.

Baja Designs will NOT be offering a Squadron SAE upgrade service. The upgrade requires the lights to be stripped to bare housings and built back up. This requires a lot of labor and would put a big delay in our production department. Upgrade pricing would be nearly the same price as retail price on the new lights.

The optics behind the lens as well as the lens is what determines the pattern.

As mentioned above, it's not a simple lens swap. The internals of the lights are completely different.

@Baja Designs will you be offering a flush mount version of the SAE lights?

if not, my mounting solution may require them to be mounted sideways, i assume the pattern would function the same if i were to remove and rotate the lens 90deg opposite?

thanks

I am interested in seeing a side by side difference between the standard beam pattern versus this SAE/DOT version on the same vehicle.

From what I am reading in this thread… this light unfortunately does not have a DOT approval, only SAE. So from a purely legal standpoint, still not street legal as it needs a DOT approval?

I would be pretty happy to be proven wrong, because I could justify something like this if I could use them on-road in addition to off-road. DOT approval basically means instant win if you ever got a fix-it ticket or some sort of violation.

From reading the link above:
“Therefore, just because a vehicle component such as a LED light is SAE approved, it does not mean it is legal to be used on public roads, all it means is that the quality of the design and construction meet the standards set by SAE, which are very high standards indeed.”

Thanks for saying this. I just learned that SAE and DOT are two different agencies!
