Powertrax LockRight 1620-LR in a 5th gen

Hello everyone. So I don't post a lot on t4r, since I basically wheel with just tacomaworld guys, but I figured this would be a good place to do a write-up on the Powertrax 1620-LR mechanical locker in a 5th gen, since I personally have not seen one yet.

For those of you who do not know what a mechanical locker is, ie. powertrax, spartan locker, etc, it is basically a locker that locks the differential under throttle/torque and leaves it open when no throttle/torque (or just idle throttle) is applied. For more detail on that, I'd suggest doing research, because I know how it works, but is hard for me to explain without being able to show it. Basically it is a cheaper alternative to selectable lockers.

Pros:
-Don't have to switch it on
-Cheaper than ARB or e-locker
-Easy install with some mechanical ability and tools

Cons:
-Road manners are not the greatest (will cover that with more detail further down)
-Means taking turns without giving it too much throttle
-Another piece of the puzzle that can break or wear out over time
-Not ideal for daily drivers (then again, nothing I do is, so...)

Well this is made for a 8" Toyota differential... How does it work in the 8.2"??
Well, I asked this question a lot in my research. Thankfully the guys over at ECGS are amazing an answered it with this:

The internals of the carrier housing are the SAME between the 8 and the 8.2 differentials.

Now, while this did alleviate my stress with this project some, I was still nervous about blowing up my rear diff until we finished and it worked perfectly.

Now let me cover the road manners and why I would not suggest this for DD use: it is NOISY. This thing clicks around turns (when it is typically unlocked) and if it engages around a turn because you applied throttle, if the road is wet or slick, you might get a little squirrely. The click is loud and can be heard with the windows down. Oh, and it adds a little slack into the driveline due to the design of the locker. So if you hit the throttle hard, it lurches a little bit. So why did I install it? Well, because I have a sweet little Subaru for a daily and the 4R only sees road to get to trails and campsites. And I like not having to turn it on while off-roading.

Actual install:
I used this install guide from a 3rd gen 4runner because the powertrax instructions are good, but not great. Thanks to smkd13 for a great install write-up.
Lock-Right Locker Install

The major difference is the 3rd gen uses these adjuster rings:
Powertrax LockRight 1620-LR in a 5th gen-adjuster-rings-jpg

5th gens do not. We have shims in ours (non e-lockers). We had to use a dead-blow to tap them out. I did not take a great picture of these, but you can see it sitting under the bearing sleeve on the right side of this picture.

Outside of that minor detail, we followed that write-up.

I think that is it. Thank you all for reading and I hope this answered any questions some of you may have had. If I mis-stated something or left out a detail or got something wrong, please feel free to correct me. I am not, by any stretch, experienced with this kind of stuff, but I wanted to get this out there in case somebody has the same questions I had before I started.

That's very interesting.

The 8.2 and 8.0 carrier flanges are definitely not the same. For starters the 8.2 has 12 bolts for the ring gear where the 8 only has 10. But it appears that the internals may be interchangeable. Sounds like the internal carrier that bolts to the flange is the same. That's good to know! There are a bunch of "lunch-box" lockers for the 8" diff that could be used.

Now I'm going to have to measure the ring gear internal diameter to see that they are in fact the same ID. I have some of both in my garage. If so - and the offset is the same - and rear locker for the 8" should be machinable to be used in an 8.2 by changing to the bolt pattern or having a machined flange build to match.

Also the 8.2 e-locker uses adjustment rings. I assumed the 8.2 non-elocker used them also. That is also interesting to learn that they're shimmed in one and not the other.

Right. I think ECGS meant more the internals are the same. My buddy who helped me with this was also surprised by the shims.

When I talked to ECGS they listed a list of lunch-box lockers that would fit. Unfortunately I didn't write any of them down, but of them, I remember the powertrax (obviously) and the spartan locker.

Updating OP so as to not confuse people.

I've got the Powertrax No-Slip in the back of my FJ40, same basic concept but it quiet ... no clicking. It's got an extra set of springs that helps the locker unlock in turns so you don't feel the disengagement like you to with a Lock Right or Aussie and no clicking. Driveability is a little smoother than other lunch box lockers, but unfortunately I don't see that option for the T4R on the Powertrax site

My friend who helped me has the no-slip in his taco. Thats actually what stared this whole thing. His is super quiet compared to my Lockright, until he gets a loud bang sometimes (his taco is a manual)

I looked everywhere to try and find one but they simply just don't exist for the 4R unfortunately.

I've had a detroit full auto-locker and a detroit luchbox style locker. The full detroit was actually very easy to live with. Most of the time you'e never know it was there. The only time I'd ever notice anything was pulling into tight parking spots. But it wasn't loud or jarring or anything like that. The detroit luchbox locker was very rough around the edges. Both functioned very well off-road. I think the claims of problems on snow or ice are usually only from people who have never actually driven one. I never had any issues in that regard. I am curious what happens if the skid control system kick in on a modern vehicle. The two may not play well together.

In my FJ40 with the rear diff cover plate, you could install them without removing the diff at all. It was literally an hour install start to finish. You could install one during your lunch break, thus the name lunchbox locker.

Yeah Its gonna be interesting to see how the skid control system functions with the locker.

That sounds nice. I wish mine was that easy, but it was still only 3 or 4 hours, and a lot of that was reading and taking breaks. If I did it again and didn't stop and read to double check myself, it would only take a couple hours (outside of the gasket drying)

Do they still have a ''GO-no-GO'' gauge you use to check fit?......been 25 years since I put my Powertrax in my 8'' but no problems and never made a sound! You learn to fly up to sharp corners and coast around until straight then get on the gas or else it will Bark the tires........

This model did not have it. I know my buddy's no-slip for his tacoma had the go/no-go guage.

I have gotten used to the clicking, but I did get a tire chirp yesterday running to Lowe's. It was a round-about and I hit it a little slower than i thought and had to give it gas to get out of it.
