How often should one replace 3.5 quarts in order to maintain a mixture of low and high mileage fluid, such that average miles on the mixture does not ever exceed 100,000?

I created a spreadsheet to calculate it.

Change 3.5 quarts every 30,000 miles to maintain old-new mixture average fluid life under 100,000 miles. There will always be a small amount of the original WS fluid in the transmission, ~1 quart after 270,000 miles and ~1 pint after 350,000 miles.

I have these calculations in a spreadsheet. If you haven't changed fluid and want to know how to bring mixed fluid life down to a particular number of average miles, post your fluid change history and I'll calculate how many 3.5 quart changes are needed assuming a 14 quart total capacity.
Hi Doug - thanks for the post. I realize it's been a couple years, but curious if you could share the formula for the partial fill / mileage? I have an 2018 with roughly 48.5k miles and thinking it might make more sense to use this method.

Thank you!!

Seems easier to just replace all of the fluid every 100k miles. A funnel and hose down to the fill port makes the job easy, done it 3 times on my current 4runner and twice on my previous 2nd gen Tacoma.

I know it is easier to do a full change every 100k, but doing it every 3 years, 30-45k for average drivers, is a good way to keep tabs on it. I’d like to see how my fluid looks more than once every 10 years.

As a data point I changed my ATF for the first time at 150,000 miles and did a full tranny pan drop and filter change. The fluid looked fine and this is after severe use offroad, a ton of water crossings, oversized tires and living in a mountainous area.

I really dont think you all need to be changing the fluid so frequently.

I decided to not do multiple drain and fills. See this thread To Drain & Fill or Not to It has a graph with the formula you want. I posted a comment in that thread explaining why I do not drain and fill.

Thank you @DougR . I'll take a look.

I am still on the fence of which method to go with. Lots of different theories and ideas out there.

I haven't done it on my 4Runner yet but I did do that on my previous FJ Cruiser. I was surprised at how easy the job ended up being. It was just a little tedious because I'd pump out/replace 2 quarts at a time but otherwise it was easy.
