What’s my T4R worth?

Never thought I would ever consider selling my 5th gen, but my family has outgrown it and doesn’t make practical sense to keep her.

I’ve made some significant improvements to my truck that make it more capable off-road than stock, but more importantly, a dream to drive on tarmac.

I plan to post the truck for sale in a few weeks and would love my fellow members’ input on where it should be priced given the condition and upgrades. This isn’t a for sale post so I’ll keep this high level and save the details for later. Again, just looking to get a feel for the market.

I would say pull off the Konigs and Gobi rack to sell separately, then it's probably blue book for what you have left. Some buyers will appreciate the King setup and battery system, but most won't have any idea what they are. Good luck, and I hope you like the new ride.

Return one or two family members, it's cheaper and you get to keep the 4runner.

Pull off all the accessories you can and sell them separately. They add zero value as 99% of buyers have no idea what they are/don't care/won't pay more for them. Aftermarket parts have a huge depreciation curve. Especially things like rebuildable shocks. Most people will not want to mess with those.

Thanks! so consensus so far is return the truck to close to OEM as possible for maximum return? Have you all done the same in the past? From my standpoint, I would have paid a slight premium for an “already” built truck but perhaps I’m in the minority.

Also, is the private party hassle generally worth it or do you guys like Carmax or trading in at a dealer?

Thanks again all,

I would say that probably depends on what vehicle you want to replace it with. If you wanted a Sequoia for example, there's a good chance you can trade the T4R in to the dealership and get a very fair trade value for it. I am getting mail/email left and right from dealerships that want me to come trade in my '16. Yours looks super clean, I'm sure a dealership wouldn't mind having it on their lot. Could always take it to a CarMax first to see what they offer so you have a good gauge. Private sale has often been some sort of hassle for me. I'd rather lose $500 from the sale than wait it out an extra six weeks and deal with random wackos that want to test drive it to Moab and beat you down on the asking price.

Having done many cars deals for myself and my family (I’ve made a name for myself on my car buying savviness), I can fully agree with pulling aftermarket parts where possible. The caveat is this:

If you’re willing to sell private party, advertise it as it sits with a certain price you feel is fair. Then offer a lower price without the bits you can pull. This gives buyers the options of having those parts or you selling them for money back.

The difference between trade and private party sale is more significant than $500 as mentioned by someone else. In my experience, it’s minimally $1500 and often more.

The trade off to NOT trading the truck in is that you don’t get the tax credit, so you pay more in taxes. Example, you’re buying a $20,000 truck and get a $15,000 trade in value on your Runner. So you’re only taxed on $5,000, whereas you’d otherwise be taxed on the $20,000 purchase price.

The good news is that these 4Runners hold their value really well. I’d use NADAGUIDES.COM for a more accurate valuation. Kelly blue book is only relevant in the California market.

Either way, if trading, pull off your bits. The dealer won’t give you a penny for anything claiming it doesn’t add value, but will turn around and list your trade for sale at a higher price as they list the upgrades. Douchebags.

Only problem with that is California doesn't give trade credit like many states do.

That’s lame but not surprising I guess.

Thanks guys for all your input. I expect to post the truck for sale in about a month. If anyone knows of someone who may be interested in my truck the way she sits, I’d be open to having a conversation. I’ll be posting her up for sale soon.

Thanks all,
