INcrease paint thickness doesnt always correlate with increased mechanical properties of the coating, in fact often times higher dry film thickness equates to poorer mechanical properties.

You didnt hear anybody grumbling about cadium arsenic chrome lead based coatings..they were great!
i didn't say they weren't better paints, i said water based paints are fine and plenty of manufacturers and are perfectly fine today. the change over started decades ago, we're at least a decade past everyone using water based paints and we've made it through the growing pains of flaking clear coats. the paint on the 4runner is notable bad even among other contemporary water based paints, it is very thin and scratches easily.

Toyota Paint

The only thing cheaper and thinner than the exterior paint is the interior painted plastics!!!! For a rough and tumble go anywhere SUV, the exterior and interior should not scratch with light touching. One of my biggest disappointments with this vehicle.

Yes, water based paints are a step backwards for durability, but they've decreased the amount of crap in the air.

Radium is a far superior lume to Luminova in watches, but it had the pesky side effect of killing the "radium girls" that applied it. DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) was the greatest thing since sliced bread and so safe that you can eat it

We know better now.

"Toyota has always had thin paint"

I had a new '87 Camry LE that wasn't bad at all.

Of course, I had a '67 Chevy way back when and it had real chrome bumpers and you could dance on the roof, so everything is relative to something.

Dual range 5 speed, factory skid plate, 3 position manually adjustable rear shocks and armored exhaust. All factory, including the white spoke wheels. The front sub frame finally rusted apart.

The paint on my black 2001 4Runner was better and without orange peel as compared to my black 2018. I had to have my 2018 paint corrected and then ceramic coated for it to look good, as the dealer prep had fine scratches all over. I was able to get the dealership to pay $500 towards the $1300 for paint correction and the ceramic coating. Well worth it, so far.

I second the orange peel on these. My '19 is terrible and I really noticed it when I installed the nerf bars. I'll be doing a full paint correction (sans PPF areas) ASAP.

Super white

I have 17 model with super white, I love the way it drives, one of the best driving vehicles I ever owned. I use my 4 runner as family vehicle and Rocky Mountain fishing rig, pulls a 1000 pound drift boat that’s it. Not all river boat ramps are created equally is the main reason we purchased a 4Runner plus it is nice to get to some remote fishing spots, but it still sees over 95 percent on road miles. Anywhere there is plastic the paint is starting to peel, and it chips like crazy all over the vehicle. 22000 miles and the paint is total garbage. I have put in a warranty claim to Toyota, but if they don’t cover it, it will be the last Toyota I own, I’ll start looking at Jeeps!

I had my voodoo blue ceramic coated and the detailer had a hard time because the paint would micro scratch. He called the dealer about this because this is the first time he's encountered something like this! The dealership only could say that the paint might not be fully set yet, so he will look at it again in 6 months.
This voodoo blue is harder to take care of than black!

Well, if it was like mine, the micro scratches are from poor dealer prep and the quick and dirty lousy washes the dealership crews do. My 4Runner was in the Ceramic Pro shop for one week as they really took the time and went through many stages of paint correction and buffing. Thin paint with lots of orange peel and subpar clear coat. I was so upset when I found out the local detail shop couldn’t fix it with normal clay bar and polish I wanted to get rid of it. Luckily the Ceramic Pro shop did a great job and got 90% of the blemishes and micro scratches out.

+1 on the orange peel, my 2018 has it pretty bad. Got the dealer to put $300 towards paint correction, but it's still not all that great.

Mine scratches easily, but no chips. Bought in Feb. 2016.
My gf has a 2018 RAV4 that has some chips on the hood. She drives fast so its likely her bad habits while on the road. It's the high velocity ricochets. I stay back 2 or 3 seconds from people on the highway.

Can’t argue with you too much about Toyota paint quality.

My white ‘06 Tundra paint started to oxidize at two years. My silver ‘09 Tundra was much better. At 9 years the clear coat had one small spot that was starting to fail. So far my silver 2019 T4R is holding up fine especially considering the off road pinstripe hell I’ve been putting it through since day two of ownership.

The clear coat on my 2017 Ford F-150 in “Bronze Fire” was starting to fail at 18 months and 30,000 miles. Worst paint on any vehicle I’ve ever owned.

Most mass produced cars have orange peel, even high end luxury vehicles. Probably need to wet sand the already very thin clear coat to remove orange peel.

Why bother, let it go. Correct swirls and marring, fill in pinstriping from trails with a glaze, apply sealant, and spend more time driving!
