I have a Voodoo Blue ... 5k miles and a few pretty decent off road trips. I have one chip on the hood that came from a rock off a truck on I5, a chip in the window that also came from a rock off a truck on I5, and a few scratches in the clearcoat from trees along the trail ... all of which is perfectly normal compared to the past few vehicles my family has owned while living in this area for 20 years (2 Hondas, 1 Acura, 1 Subaru).

I also don't find the VB to be hard to care for - I hand wash it every 2 weeks or so, and it looks great.

So - and everyone has their own experience - I find the Voodoo Blue to be no different than every other car I've owned, at least so far. It's only been 9 months so far ...

As a fellow voodoo blue owner I can't disagree with anything you said. It gets it's chips like any vehicle driven at a high velocity and in rough environments. If I expected it to look perfect I'd keep it in the garage like Cameron's dad

I have a MGM 2016 Trail, I do not have a paint chip and this is after a winter that saw sand used for ice traction. I also detail my cars, the clear coat on my 4Runner is easy to work and correct the small micro scratches from car washes. Also I do not have orange peel, the side view is a mirror.

I know my paint is better now than when I bought it, unfortunately it sat under a pine tree until I took it home. It took hours of clay baring to remove all the pine "droppings". What dealership has pines, idiots.

Toyotas paint is garbage. I don't care what you say. In the last decade I've owned 6 new vehicles from 3 different manufacturers, and now I own a 9 year old GMC Sierra that has better paint quality than our '19 TRDOR that I bought for my wife.

We didn't even have 200 miles on it when I found the first gouge in the front bumper plastic, that I seriously dount we caused. Id bet it was an issue during delivery. The dealer couldn't have cared less. All I got out of them was a free bottle of touchup paint, it was almost like they were use to complaints about paint quality and were done making attempts to satisfy the customer.

With less than 3500 miles on it now, it has even more paint chips. Two on the rear bumper that must have come from the carwash that I've been through 1000 times with other vehicles with no issues. Numerous others on the hood and mirrors that I didnt bother taking pictures of because they arent too bad. Yet.

The one on the door edge was my fault, I'll give you that much. But the vehicle I accidentally hit while getting our daughter out of her car seat didnt even have a scuff mark.

You can say what you want about "it's a 4runner, get over it" or "keep it parked in the garage", because in some degree I agree. However, when I pay nearly $45k for a vehicle, I expect better quality.

I'm disappointed to hear that it's a pretty common issue with Yotas as I was considering getting a Tundra as my next truck.

But hey, it looks amazing from 30 feet.

I’m looking at trading my 17 White Pro in on voodoo blue. Yes my 4Runner with 12,000 miles on it has some chips in the front nose but not many. But I may have to get the front of it wrapped to protect it. I had my 19 Z06 fully wrapped and it is black and really protects it. Anyone has any input after owning it for a while. How is it washing it and waxing it your self.

I agree with everyone that says Toyota paint is garbage. I knew this when buying my 19 ORP though, but it still sucks. I had my fingers crossed it was better. Just over 1200 miles on it and already have 4 chips in the paint and a small surface scratch that refuses to buff out. Same issue when I had my Scion, Tacoma and last 4runner.

During that time I have had a Kia and 4 Mazdas and their paint is superior. My 2 current Mazdas have 0 chips with a ton more miles and every scratch that I have gotten with them has buffed out with a simple rag and elbow grease.

Yep, it's crap, already dealing with a few blemishes and chips on my 4 day old 2020, I could have been more careful, but it damages really easy.

Water based paints may offer UV durability, that said their mechanical properties are generally less than solvent based all things being equal.

Enviro nazis are ruining the world. Ruining paint was just one of their end results.

Four different chips of varying size on VB at < 100 miles. Toyota paint quality being garbage is an understatement.

I totally agree about the Toyota pearl being better having oned a White 2014 and a White 2016 4Runner and a 2017 Highlander Blizzard Pearl for approxamitely the same period of miles.

My 2019 with Barcelona Red already has paint chips up over the windshield on the passenger side. I filled them in with touch up paint but you can still see the little indentions because of the deep chips. They are up high so it's kind of a "out of sight, out of mind" thing.

The more and more I read about the chips I have the same. My 17 Pro is not bad. But I really leaning towards getting my army green front nose wrapped when I get it. That is the only area on my Pro that basically has chips. My truck is mostly driven highway miles.

Just an observation from someone who has bought a lot of new cars over the past 15 years. I think I’ve read this complaint about poor/soft paint from literally every enthusiast forum in that time. I think it’s more of an industry thing now that everyone is going to low VOC paints. I’ve seen this on Nissan, Audi, BMW, Ford, Toyota, Mazda and VW forums. From what I can tell so far in 5k miles my silver 4Runner paint is no better or worse than any others I’ve seen in the past 10 years or so.

Also having issues with paint chipping to the metal. I’ve owned many cars and never seen paint this thin. My 4Runner is a 2020 in Super White. It honestly looks like there is no primer and it’s one layer of white paint, that thin. If these vehicles are made for off-road, why would they not make or use a more durable paint?
