I put it in at night. My garage is pretty well lit, I had the parking lamps on only and the radio stayed the same brightness whether I covered the sensor with a rag or not. I chalked it up to not having complete wiring to the ECU or whatever and considered it a 10 dollar plastic upgrade.

Then a few days later, outside during the day (sunny), I decided to throw the parking lights on, the radio stayed bright. I threw the rag over the sensor and three seconds later the radio ( and instrument display) dimmed. Took the rag off the radio brightened up. Put the rag on the radio dimmed.

Thanks! I'll try it one more time.

Can't believe this mod even exists, I will do it too but I am disappointed that it is so cheap and Toyota wouldn't do it for us.

Kind of confused, if you turn the lights on and the gauges go dim and the GPS goes dark like it should, (making sure the dial isn’t set all the way up) what does this do? Seems it has all been done already?

when it’s bright outside, say a light rain is in the forecast, and you live in a state where you have to have your headlights on with the wipers, it’s annoying to have everything dim in the middle of the day...this little mod fixes that problem.

I hadn't even thought about making this mod until I read your post and ended up ordering the part. Thanks for sharing

Took 5 minutes (and $6)...
Works great in my ‘16 Trail Premium.

Thanks, OP!

Makes me wonder what other sort of mods might be available for models with pre-wired sensors..

I was replacing the rear door speakers last weekend, and noticed that my 2015 TEP appears to have temperature sensors installed behind the door panel. I don't recall the front doors but guessing maybe there also.

So somewhere there's a signal that could enable auto climate control even though we actually have only the big knobby manual system.

Any other sensors that might be in place but dormant.. Or non-dormant features just waiting for a sensor to be plugged in...

I may add this to my list of potential mods after I fix all the problems I have.

This already has been, or is being attempted by a member here. There is a thread about it somewhere. Might actually be in the auto headlight thread. Basically, it requires all the limited trim and a different bcm. But do t quote me on that.
