Awesome. I picked up an OEM used one off eBay from a Lexus for $22. Should be here Monday.

Unfortunately this doesn't affect the clock. One of my pet peeves is the clock dims with the headlights on even in daylight. There is a "headlights required in day" road I use regularly and the clock is so dim I can't see it. I also turn on the headlights during the day when I'm on a two lane highway. I was hoping this would prevent this dimming, but it doesn't.

have you messed with the dimmer knob? I'm pretty sure you can set it for full brightness w/ headlights on. (although i Have to admit, i haven't messed with my dimmer knob in a while).

Yeah, this mod is for people who want it to auto dim, not prevent dimming.

Yep, I've messed with it. Even at full brightness (past the click at the top), the clock dims with the headlights on.

Light Sensor Install With Pics

Here are step by step directions on the install. Pics below.

Step 1: Search Ebay and order: 89121-50020
Step 2: Unpack your new sensor and wrap electrical tape around the tabs so you'll be able to get the sensor out of the dash in the future (Thanks for the idea MC1986). I found that cutting a 3-4 inch long piece in half LENGTHWISE was strong enough to hold the tabs. I originally did not cut in half and it was too thick to fit back into the dash.
Step 3: Select credit or other card for sensor removal (I prefer the Costco card myself).
  • Note - I tried my smallest trim panel removal tool first but there is just no good angle.
Step 4: Work the card under the existing sensor head on the WINDSHIELD side and pull upward.
Step 5: With the sensor removed from the dash but STILL CONNECTED, put a hanger, pipe cleaner, or other item through the wires so it doesn't fall back in the hole.
Step 6: Remove factory sensor. Plug in aftermarket sensor.
Step 7: Test sensor by turning the ignition on, turn on your headlights, turn off the lights in the garage, the instrument panel should be lit dimly. Put a flashlight over the sensor - the instrument panel should get lighter.
Step 8: Remove hanger/pipe cleaner from the wires and insert sensor back into dash

Note - you have Entune go to post 56 on this thread (page 4) from Electoboy for steps to get the radio/nav to dim

I have 2017 SR5P and it does have the wires under the plug. Took a 1 inch drywall nail upside down, and pulled the plug up from the windshield side with the head of the nail.

Mine is working for now.

My clock dims as yours does. Interested to see if everyone has this problem or if it’s just because we have the old part number.

Although it would be nice to brighten up the clock display during the day, the dimming operation of the clock is not the sign of a problem, that’s just the way it works (a feature!). That’s also how my combination meter retrofit works.
2015+ Accessory Meter Display Mod & Conversion Harness How To

The designer, @Old Red , of this conversion mod extensively researched, experimented, and tested the clock/meter interface. He’s a 4R electrical guru; one of the best on the forum. Maybe he’ll comment here if there’s any workaround.

I ordered the sensor on ebay from the Kentucky seller and received it today, 4 days not bad.

The bad news: it does not work in my 2017 SR5P which has the wires to the dummy plug. So I'm not sure if I received a bad sensor or what the problem is. Probably not worth spending much more time on.
