At least on my non-premium 2019 Off Road, if the headlights are left on and the vehicle is turned off, the headlights will turn off on their own after a short delay as a result of installing the sensor.
Previously I would get a buzzer telling me to turn off my lights as soon as I opened the door after turning off the vehicle with the headlights still on.
I wish other non-OR premium, non-limited, non-pro owners with 2019 and older 4Runners would chime in on this.
That’s really weird, my 2018 ORP doesn’t buzz when the lights are on? I typically always leave my lights in the on position when I shut the truck off. I don’t have the light sensor in mine and they shut off after maybe 30-45 seconds or when I hit lock.
I failed on this one - so I ordered a '89121-06020' on ebay, took two weeks to ship from China. They instead delivered an '89121-50020...which I discovered once I had already removed the sensor.
However, for the 2021 Off Road Premium, it's an 8pin sensor? So even if this Ebay seller sent me the correct part, (06020) is not an 8pin sensor and would not have worked?
...27 page thread so I'm sure I missed the proper part number.
Read through a bunch of pages and see where it's not working for the folks with the SR5P..I'm assuming that even though I have the wires in my SR5 that would indicate it won't work on mine either..

If you have all of the wires, then it will work for you. My 2018 SR5 didn't have all of the wires, but I added them, and it works!

Just popped off the sensor cover on my 2021 SR5 and I have the 8 pin as you show in that picture, however It really looks like a 4 pin and the second set of 4 holes are smaller and would not accept a pin. From what I gathered we will need the 4 pin as shown here: 2014-2020 Toyota Ambient Light Sensor 89121-0E060 | Toyota Parts
old part number 89121-30020 some on ebay for about $70
Current part number 89121-0E060 about $130
Cool mod but it may be easier to get in the habit of turning on the lights on before you start the 4runner at night...

Truth - and thanks. One quirk while down this rabbit hole - only found one listing/photo on ebay of that $70 sensor, 0E060, here.
*The photo from that ebay seller (which could be wrong) indicates a two pin sensor for the 0E060
To complicate matters further, I use an iPhone 11 Pro Max and Apple CarPlay most of the time.
My 2020 4Runner SR5P screen auto dims at dusk often before I turn on my headlights.

That's got nothing to do with this mod. This does not turn your headlights on for you at night. This mod brightens the instruments and infotainment system if the headlights/parking lights are on and it's bright outside.

Based on the video, I was really thinking of it the opposite way, it dims your infotainment system if it is dark out and your headlights are not yet on. Thanks for making that point that this mod works both ways. I guess that information makes this mod more valuable to me.

I also did not realize that this mod works both ways (and also have not noticed this to be the case)... I'll have to check this to be sure tomorrow.
So after reading post #55
@ElectroBoy
wrote about how to check the sensor or non sensor and realizing mine was only a plug in my 2021 TRDORP, I decide to order a 89121-30020.
Will see if this will work or not!
Now

Now, if you need to remove the actual light sensor after installation, *that* will be a royal PIA.
The locking tabs are different and need to be depressed from under the dash to push out the sensor. Be sure to test your sensor before snapping it into place.
I am wondering if these tabs can be “modified” so as to ease the removal of the sensor if needed in the future?
Does someone have an extra one to try?
