I would never own a vehicle with keyless entry/keyless start, especially if it means I can't leave the vehicle with the engine running.

The smart key system is awesome. When we are hiking, biking, or skiing, basically anything that requires a pack, we get back to the truck and you can just walk up to the back and open it or hold the down arrow on the outside of the back hatch and the rear window rolls down so you can throw all your gear in back. You never have to dig the keys out of the pack. Once your stuff is in inside you can walk around open the driver door and reach in to start the engine and get the HVAC running while you change clothes, load up equipment, have a snack, etc.
There nothing dangerous about the system, if you exit the vehicle with the key while the ignition is on it will do very loud audible warning beeps.
For what happened in the story you would need to leave the vehicle running (which let’s be honest, these things aren’t silent luxury vehicles) and have the key with you and the leave the door open, or you would have to leave the vehicle running and forget your keys. There’s nothing inherently dangerous or complicated about the system.
That being said, higher end vehicle do have auto shut off safety features, like everything if you want an abundance of extra stuff and capabilities you can open your wallet to get them.

It's really no different than a keyed system... if you want to leave it running, just leave the key-fob in the car, just like you would have to with a regular key.
This story would have ended the same if the owner decided to leave his 4Runner running with the key in the ignition.

How did his truck run all night? Most keyless starts only run for about ~15 mins and then turn on off. 15 minutes of a car running is not enough to kill someone from carbon monoxide poisoning. Something else going on with this story.
edit: after reading the story he must have had a limited model. Do limiteds not turn off after X minutes from the remote start?

Damn! This is an excellent idea!! It never dawned on me until you posted it here. Easy enough with techstream to add some fobs.
For me it's a 3 Toyota family and 3 fobs, never having the right fob for the right rig is a pita sometimes, no way am I carrying all 3 all the time.

This wasn't remote start. The owner just left the engine running - and it will keep running until the gas runs out.
The remotely started car (using the Toyota system) will shut down after 10 minutes - then restarts for another 10 minutes.

Yes, this sad event had nothing to do with the starting system.
The owner drone his car into his garage, forgot to shut the engine off and closed the garage door.
The garage was not built to current building codes and there was no carbon monoxide alarm in the house.

Keyless entry/Start is nice to have. Had it on my Lexus.
You can totally leave the car running and leave with the fob, the car has some dummy beeps that will let you know the fob isn't in there, but it'll run until you turn the car off or it runs out of gas.
Is it necessary? No, not really. Like someone said, definitely useful for women who keep keys in purses or other times when you have it in your backpack or bag.
Definitely operator error though. Dunno how you go about your day and not hear a car in the garage running...

I know there are several things a dealer can program, such as unlocking all doors with one press of the unlock button instead of two. I wonder if a shutoff timer can be programmed for keyless start that would be similar to a remote start timeout. Anyone know?

Probably not as that would be against the regulations. Envision this scenario. Hubby and wife get into the car. Hubby is driving but wifey has the keys in her purse.
The wife gets out to go shopping while hubby drives to McDonalds to get a couple of cups of coffee.
He's driving through a busy intersection when the pre-programmed "no key in car" kicks in.

Well, I’m referring to a timer that would be cancelled/disabled once the car is put in gear. So if the vehicle is started but not put into gear within 10 minutes (whatever), it shuts off, or sounds an alarm and shuts off some time afterward. If it is put into gear, timer is cancelled.

The only downfall I can see is if you press the lock/unlock buttons on the fob itself it will do both cars, however I never use those buttons at all.

Keyless entry systems make it easy to steal the vehicle. Devices are now sold on Alibaba .
