Yes, but re-locking a locked car or locking an inadvertently left unlocked car isn't so bad.

If I remember correctly there is also a setting that will re-lock the fob unlocked car within 2 minutes if no one opens a door.

I think it's a win win

My 4runner doesn't have this option but my wife's car does. The best feature I like about keyless entry is never having to take the key out to open the trunk. Also another helpful function is all the car settings (seats, mirrors, etc.) are saved to each key fob individually.

Don't judge the victims unless you've lived with the keyless system. I got a smoking deal on a new Tacoma in 2016. I would never have paid extra for it. You still have to carry a fob, what's so hard about using a key? I read another article that 36 people have died from keyless cars so far; most recently a couple in FL. People who don't have gas or oil heat don't tend to have CO detector in their homes. I'm not stupid but two times I've been in conversation with my passenger and pushed the button (not hard enough) and the truck has stayed running. What clued me in right away both times was that it would not lock. Obviously they wouldn't lock a car in their garage. A little bit of inattentiveness should not kill people. It's weird most of the deaths have been with Toyotas.

Definitely an issue, they work as basically constant near field RF, so all you need is a radio extender and someone can remote start or remote open your car while your fob is in the house.

No, the SR5/Trail/Pro cannot be programmed to unlock all 4 doors with a single push of the unlock button (at least from '15 and up, as I haven't owned one older than a '15, and currently have an '18 TRDORP)
You have to upgrade to an aftermarket remote start system to get that feature.

No quite. If (big IF) they are they are within range of your remote and the car then they might be able intercept the signal.

It ain't that easy.

Was just making up an example of a dealer programmable item. I don’t have a list of them. Seat belt chimes, etc. I was just wondering if shutoff timers could be programmed. Might be a nice option.

With the factory remote start, there is a timed shut off. IIRC it's 15 minutes.
But having a times shut off with push to start is not feasible. and if it were, it could potentially shut off when driving, which is a whole other liability issue.

This event was caused by the owner not shutting off the vehicle when he parked, similar to the gentleman who died of heat stroke because he didn't know how to open the door of his C7 Corvette when the battery died.

You understand what I’m saying, right? I agree it’s the fault of whomever left the vehicle running. All I’m asking is this; can it be programmed (in the future maybe) to shut the car off if it’s started and not put into gear after xx minutes.

I don't see why not. And that's probably what the government is going to mandate.

While we do need to legislate for the stupidest amongst us, I don't see this happening anytime soon as there are too many scenarios where this wouldn't (shouldn't) work.

While it certainly would conceivable that the car shuts down in XX minutes if it is started from outside and no door opened - just like many cars can be programmed to re-lock doors if no door is opened within 45 seconds or so.

That won't work if the car is driven and later put in park. Is the owner sitting in the car reading emails? Did the owner run an errand and leave his infants in the car while parked in his gated driveway? Did they not shut it down because they are escaping from a serial killer who has the fob, or did they forget to shut it off in their attached garage that doesn't meet code and the house has no carbon monoxide alarms.

Legislate? I never implied that. Options. I’m simply referring to programmable options that I CHOOSE. Like “Hey, I might like my car to do THIS. I start my car, then get distracted by a minor emergency (I have a handicapped son who creates these). Can I program my car to SHUT OFF if I don’t return and put it into gear within ten minutes, or whatever time I decide? You’re assuming that the timer re-starts if the car is subsequently put into park again. That would be idiotic.

I really like having end user programmable settings… I have a couple different cars that allow for various operational changes by the user.

I forgot all of them but I have a multitude of options to configure between my Acura car and Chevy truck
  • I can change if I want the car to lock when its put in gear or not.
  • Unlock when its put in park or after the ignition is turned off.
  • If the unlock button does all doors or just the driver on the 1st push.
  • How long the headlights stay on after locking, as a courtesy light in a dark garage
  • Door re-lock if not opened after some time.

I forgot all the options, but being it defined by the user makes the most sense to me.
