  • If the unlock button does all doors or just the driver on the 1st push.

I forgot all the options, but being it defined by the user makes the most sense to me.
Thank you. I think you and I agree that user-definable options can be useful.

You’re assuming that the timer re-starts if the car is subsequently put into park again. That would be idiotic.
Part of the legislation is to limit some options so that people can't hurt themselves.

For example, some cars can be programmed to roll down the windows with the key fob, but they cannot be programmed to roll them back up remotely - although you may be able to roll them up with the key in the door lock.

Part of the issue here is new'ish technology. We don't generally forget to shut our car off with a key because (even during an emergency) we're used to it and it has become muscle memory. Once we become accustomed to every car having a start button, then shutting the car off won't be an issue any longer.

At some point, our cars will know where we are and will themselves off if you're in the garage and the door is closed.

I really prefer legislation stay out of most things… without the context of how its going to be used, it often times falls short with people making assumptions about things that might not know much about.

Context matters…

Remote start or keyless start turning my truck off is not something I would want… Yes, I could be an idiot who forgot to turn it off and didn’t have a carbon monoxide detector. I could also be a person who uses it as a work truck, where I need to run the engine to support electrical or hydraulic loads and need it to run uninterrupted without having to leaving the key in the ignition which would be irresponsible in its own right.

Good intentions don’t always work, for argument sake… What if they legislated cars with radar or sensors like a Tesla to prevent running people over 100% of the time, every time. What if the person you are trying to run over is a crazed lunatic trying to kill you.

This is how stupid people are.

Government bans plastic straw to save the whale owls.

Idiots make metal eco straws.

Eco straws KILL by lobotomy death.

Metal drinking straw warning after death of woman impaled through eye

If yer careless/stupid/dumb enough to not turn your vehicle off, key or push button, it’s called “natural selection”. Just sayin’. Maybe you should surrender your license. I have to use car washes and don’t want some government mandated POS shuttin’ my vehicle down while I’m waitin’ for it to be done.

I don't want to derail this thread with talking about straws but I can't resist. This whole metal straw thing is absurd. I can just imagine myself going into Dairy Queen for a shake with my straw in my shirt pocket. When I'm done with the shake WTF do I do with the straw? Do I stick it back in my shirt pocket? When do I wash it? Some have rubber tips. How do I really clean that? What new bugs are we breeding here?

While I agree that we might want to look for alternatives for the crap that we are adding to landfills and oceans, but let's look at the worst offenders first - and it ain't straws.

Oh - the woman could have been killed by a plastic straw as well.

I'm thinking it would be easier to educate the drivers on the features of their cars. I also think it makes little sense to change a feature (that goofy shifter from Jeep [and others] from a couple of years ago that make it nearly impossible to figure out what gear you are in.) for the sake of change.

The push to start makes sense because you don't need to dig your key out of your pocket/purse so it have a convenience value, but where is the value of the electronic shifters to the end user?

My GLE's electronic shifter is phenominal, as are all their other models. Jeeps was god awful and that's why they changed it. As far as "value" it allows the the center console area to be free of the shifter mechanism which leaves room for more features. (at least that's my guess)

Agree here. I love my keyless start and proximity lock/unlock. I just wish I could figure out how to keep it “on” when I kill the engine so the radio keeps playing without having to turn it back on #9thpost #questfor15

Turn your truck off while in Drive or Neutral and then put it into park. Boom. Radio stays on.

Amen! When are people going to be held accountable for the inane actions?
