Fog Lights to Driving Lights?

Has anyone mounted xenon driving lights in fog light location?

Doing this is a good way to make everyone else on the road hate your guts. It's obnoxious and the low placement does not allow of adequate throw. Fog lights are down low for a reason.

The height location of the 4runner fog lights are almost the same height as on a regular car headlight.

The height location of the 4runner fog lights are the same height if you put a light bar in the 4runner grille.

So I believe that the 4runner fog light locations are not that low.

Cool well have fun blasting everyone with 4 headlights. Wish I could have the belief that I'm inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment. Too busy keeping it real tho oh well

As long as they are treated as aux lights (like a lightbar) and not fog/driving lights (ie. you can't have these on when oncoming traffic is present), they should work just fine.

Baja Designs seems to have the brightest lights that fit the foglight holes. They also have a new SAE approved model that focuses the light low like a fog, but they are still something like 2400 lumens each so probably still not something you'd want to leave on when there's other cars on the road around you.

Agreed. Always on is a d*ck move tho. One or two people pass me daily on my commute with quad led headlights and I just want to plow into them head on day.

Correct, only on when needed just like a light bar.

This is a decent idea then. But even out here in the desert I find my fogs to be useful in the dust (particularly with orange/amber film) . You have all kinds of fog in PA wouldn't you rather have a functional fog light?

We don't get a lot of fog here, but we do have a lot of deer in the ditches, hit one in the fall as a matter of fact and nearly wrote off my GX470. Snow too, we get a lot of snow here.

I'm looking at the BD SAE Sport in amber to replace the foglights, which are pretty well useless in my experience, as my HID lows completely drown out the factory foglight output. Cops also love writing tickets for aux lights uncovered on the roads, so the SAE approved version is a must for me.

Down here we look for DOT approved (department of transportation). Think rigid has a set of approved led fogs.

Like I mentioned in the "Baja" thread, SAE International (they used to be called the Society of Automotive Engineers) approval carries as much weight as having it approved by the cashier at Taco Bell.

SAE creates voluntary standards for some non-regulated systems and these standards mean nothing under the actual regulations.

DOT approves nothing. They (via NHTSA) write the rules (for lighting it is FMVSS 108) and manufacturers certify that the lighting units meet the standards. They do this by molding the certification into the lens of the lighting unit.

"Driving lights" are not specifically referenced in 108 but there are other parts of the standard that that - in effect - limit the use of the lights. For example:

No lights (with the exception of side marker lights) may be on with the low beams. Fog lights may be on with low beams.

The same applies to high beam with this exception "a lower beam light source may remain permanently activated when an upper beam light source is activated if the lower beam light source contributes to the upper beam photometric compliance of the headlighting system."

The fog light may not be on with the high beam.
