@slidez Shipping from China varies so much. Which port it left from, did it taken by pirates, did Florida man get caught smuggling drugs while your shipment was coming in, etc.

Was considering an order through Car Home Trim due to their FB support but they posted on their FB page that they just put a hold on any more T9's shipping out due to a high pitched whine from the HU when installed. Good news is that it appears that the company is quick to replace as needed - not sure about Rhino. Either way, I think I'll hold until I hear more success stories than problems.

In the computer world, we refer to it as "coil whine". Unless you crack it open and replace the component making the noise, you'd have to replace it. Good idea to hold off till this production issue is resolved.

The only time I ever heard coil whine on my PC is when I'm working in the Unreal Engine. It's so loud it's, scary. Sounds like my PC is about to explode. Apparently it's normally for a lot of people using Unreal. There is no way I could EVER stand hearing that noise in my truck when I'm driving.

I've been working with the vendor on this unit and the whine that it's making. Today a replacement unit arrived with the hopes that it wouldn't have the same issue, but unfortunately it does. I've reached out to the vendor to see how they want to proceed, but I happen to have a shop full of tools and can do everything from surface mount to some BGA work, so if they decide to just refund me I may try to fix one of these before it goes back.

Either way the vendor has stopped selling the headunit (I think it's the same dudes as cartrimhome).

They're all coming from the same factory in China just being sold by different companies (Rhino, CarTrimHome, etc.)

Scratch that, I fixed it.

I couldn't resist trying to figure out what the heck was wrong. It was clear that something was just being over driven in the PWM circuit that controls the backlight of the screen. so I took it apart and went on a hunt.

VR2 was cranked way, way up (part of the PWM circuit) so I dropped it down to around 1.25v (from 3!) and all is well now. No more whine, no loss in brightness. I'll tool around for a few days and see if this holds up. It worked on both T9 units I have in my house now, so fingers crossed.

Good job!

I have a low whine but my hearing might not be 100% anyways so who knows. I definitely don't hear it while I'm driving. Maybe I'll fix this when I paint the trim to match my interior.

NOTE: anyone not familiar with this type of adjustment, please be careful. Easy to damage the part or the device with too big of an adjustment.

I'm going to post a brief howto tonight on how to safely adjust this setting to make the whine go away for anyone impacting. It's surprisingly easy once you know where to look, but to your point, don't go sticking screwdrivers where they shouldn't go!

Just to reiterate, you can damage your radio, yourself and will void your warranty if you do this fix. If you mess something up, please don't abuse the goodwill and trust our vendors have with the community. Here be dragons.

Quick review of my recent experience.

Prior to ordering, I had communication with CTH on FB Messenger. Every question was answered within 12 hours or less. So I decided to pull the trigger and order my T9 from CTH on 09/09, it shipped on 09/12, and I received it 09/17 (5 days shipping is very good coming from China). I was able to install it with zero issues, but that may be because I spent months researching and watching every youtube video on the T8/9 and read every article I can find on the T9 so I knew what to expect and tips/tricks. I opted for the Apple CarPlay wired dongle and it's working 100%. Everything on the unit is working exactly as advertised. I installed a bunch of apps for testing and have had no trouble. I got lucky and my unit does NOT have the whine noise mentioned. Apps and menu navigations have no issues and quick. As far as form and fit, there are a few area around the bezel that could have been trimmed more precisely. I only noticed it while comparing side by side with the OEM stereo, otherwise you wouldn't notice once installed. There was some dust under the glass screen. The connectors on the back don't snap-in great and takes little bit of finagling. Once you get past that, the unit is awesome. I have stock non-JBL speakers and the extensive EQ options makes the system sounds so much better. I'm in my vehicle 1.5 hours a day and so far have 12+ hours with the unit. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase. Let me know if you have any questions.

I've been working with CTH and have repaired 3 units (from another seller) so far all with the whine problem so it looks like it's confirmed to be that VR2 out of adjustment. CTH is working with the manufacturer now to fix it .
