"Loose" steering with rattle
So I've noticed a slight clunk sound whenever I hit the brakes in my 2016 4Runner lately.
Worried it might be ball joint or suspension related I jacked up the front and and proceeded to do the 12 and 6 o'clock shake on the wheels, but noticed no movement.
When shaking the front wheels at the 9 and 3 o'clock position there is some play, maybe a 1/4 inch or so as well as a rattling sound coming from underneath somewhere I wasn't able to identify. Didn't seem to be any movement in the outer tie rods, for what thats worth.
I tried turning the ignition to ON (engine not running) and moving the steering wheel from side to side. I didn't notice any noises or 'looseness' in the steering when doing it this way. I also didn't notice the noise mentioned before when shaking the wheels at 9 and 3 with the ignition on.
is this something I should be worried about? Is it possible its just related to the steering lock with the ignition off?
