But I think I get the issue if the internals needed swapped to work.
I am surprised that the fit was that far off though.
I see what you're saying..not sure if you read back in the thread where I had to send the tool back because it was defective. Something went wonky in the casting process of that batch and caused the key holes for the housing to be off.

Metal Oil Filter Housing Upgrade + Motivx Tools Oil Filter Wrench

To reinstall the tube, first insert the bottom plate, with the domed side facing up. Put the spring inside the tube. Insert the tube into the housing at an angle, placing the tabs of it under the “feet” inside the housing. Push in at the bottom of the tube, while applying pressure at the top. Once installed, the tube should have spring tension on it. Press down on it a few times to ensure that it moves freely, and does not come out of the housing.

So I was helping the brother in law with his oil change and I noticed he did not swap out the tube from his old plastic oil filter housing onto the new metal one. He's probably driven the car 20K miles like this, should he be concerned? We have since swapped the longer tube onto his metal housing but he's a bit worried he may have damaged his engine by not filtering the oil properly. From my understanding, the metal tube is where the filtered flows back into the engine after oil has passed through the outside of the cartridge filter. As it flowing back up tube, even though the tube is shorter, the oil is still flowing back into the engine because it's flowing inside of the inner walls of the cartridge filter right? The difference in height is negligible.

Haven't gotten around to doing this swap, but I thought it was a clearance issue..If the housing went on with the other tube without issue, I can't imagine any damage was done.

Glad you bought the Toyota approved filter housing. I bought one from NAPA Auto Parts and it leaked. I put the plastic one back on and no problems.
