Installed - Wits End Fire Extinguisher Mount

I received my Wits End fire extinguisher mount yesterday. I must say I was impressed from the beginning. I placed my order on the 14th and got it yesterday. The mount was wrapped is heavy paper and then wrapped again with large bubble wrap and placed in a box. Nicely packaged. I picked up the automotive fire extinguisher from HomeDepot. It was about $20 and is good size. Find it HEREKidde 10 B:C Rated Auto/Marine Fire Extinguisher-21027411 - The Home Depot

Installation was straight forward. I mounted the extinguisher on the driver's side. There were no instructions, but it is easy. Remove the 2 plastic end caps covering the seat track mounting bolts. Remove the bolts. This is where you want to test-fit the mounting bracket and fire extinguisher with mount. You will want to install the fire extinguisher mount before you secure the mounting bracket to the seat. Once you have positioning of the fire extinguisher mount where you want it, you can secure the bracket to the seat track. The mounting tabs sit on top of the seat track. Tighten the bolts and you are good to do.

That being said.... a couple installation notes:
1) If you want the drivers side seat track trim pieces to be re-installed, you will need to notch the front of the trim piece slightly to go around the angled support brace of the mounting bracket. I tried, but failed to get the passenger side trim piece reinstalled. No biggie as you don't see it.
2) I have the Husky Liner WeatherBeater floormats. The floormats don't fit with the bracket installed. The rear lip doesn't slide under the bracket. I had to trim off the back lip off the floormat for it to fit. Again, not a huge issue, but something to keep in mind of.

Overall, I'm very happy with the mount. The extinguisher is within easy reach and is out of the way. I am about 6ft tall and it doesn't get in the way at all. I'm very happy with the overall final product. The cost of the mount is steep $94 including shipping + $20 for the extinguisher, however, I find the cost to be well worth it.

Glad you like the design. Probably the first and last accessory I'll design for the 5th gen.

Why is that? It is a great product! I'm debating about buying another for the passenger seat. I'm thinking I could mount something else over there.

No because the whole process was tough to get from design to final product.

And a lot of people said they wanted the mount but never ended up buying it.

Normal product design frustrations. It's a niche thing. I hope one day it saves a vehicle. It'll all be worth it then.

Looks really good.... BUT I would be cautious of the over the counter extinguishers. I went to a fire company recently and got the low down. Of course he's gonna want to sell me their products but it is true that cheaper isn't always better for protection in one's investment.

Couple things I learned:

1) the ones with the powder in them will work, but will make a terrible mess and force the powder which is finer than flour into every nook and cranny.

2) they tend to be very corrosive so the fire will go out, but the chemical can start eating away other stuff. Sooner you can clean up the better.

3) the cheap ones are cheap for a reason and have a relatively high failure rate. Something I would HATE to have F*ck up the one time you need it.

4) now the ridiculous part: fork our the big bucks for the non-powder one and don't worry about the above issues. Downside here is they are EXPENSIVE at like $180. BUT they will extinguish the fire by removing/displacing oxygen and will leave behind ZERO mess besides any fire damage. They use a gas and zero powder.

Buy once, cry once. (But better than crying over a burnt up truck)

This one was $180 but it was worth the relief of worry from a failed unit picked up at a box store. (Not trying to talk sh!t, rather just informing)

OP great mount, I would suggest you buy a better extinguisher though. Ive had a couple similar to the white one and ive found they are crap, low capacity and they leak and lose charge over time. Especially with cold to hot weather seasons. FOr any kind of practical use get one at least twice that diameter

4Reak_Show and Grug556... thanks for your input. Could you suggest a different fire extinguisher? Maybe provide a link? I'm not worried about the money. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm worried about the damage that may come with the chemical fire extinguisher. I'm more concerned about getting the fire out (whether it is my car or something else). But I'll definitely look into the other extinguishers if they are better.

Theres a new version of Halon out there ive seen. Very pricey but basically just gas with no residue. CO2 may be an option for expensive electronics. I would suggest contacting an industrial safety supply company and checking out their catalogue. The residential and home depot type stuff is light duty and generally junk. The industrial stuff can be refilled over and over again provided the valves are ok. You can weight the tank regularly to confirm you haven't lost gas in case the needle valve on the gauge sticks on full..but its actually empty.

Here's the one I have and the local company I bought it from here in Napa CA. It was actually only $150.

Called "clean agent", 2.5 lb size.
http://bestfireco.com/cart/index.php...products_id=31

And the "dry chemical" one, 2.5 lb size

http://bestfireco.com/cart/index.php...roducts_id=195

You probably can't fit a 5 lb-er under the seat. That's a bigger like household one. 2.5 lb clean agent would be my suggestion. $150 is worth it.

I have a H3R that is one of the clean agent extinguishers.

These guys or a distributor was at NW Overland Rally this year. He said it was clean, safe, can be stored on a hot car, and you can even spray people directly. He had little small cans but they make bigger ones. I think they were pretty expensive.
