Turn backup camera into recorded footage/dash cam

Im tossing around the idea of turning the rear backup camera into a dash camera. I understand the rear camera is 6 volts and uses four wires.
I think this would work nicely. Anyone have any input?

Not all cameras are designed to be operational 100%.

Anytime backup camera mod with and additional feed(s) would make that a lot easier. Additional cameras from Amazon are less than $20.

– Anytime Backup Camera

I wanted the same. I installed the Anytime backup camera wiring harness and a switch in my dash to activate the factory backup camera anytime I want.

As you pointed out, it doesn't record. I wasn't fond of the camera angle, resolution or location for recorded dash footage, though, so I went a different route.

I mounted a Mobius Action Camera in the rear cargo roof liner. There are little plastic clips that hold the liner. I removed the center clip and installed a "hanger bolt" in the roof. That hanger bolt is threaded for the industry standard camera tripod thread pitch: 1/4-20. So the Mobius threaded right onto it with no additional parts required, except a washer and nut (see pic below).

It sits very close to the rear window, but isn't attached to the glass, so I have full functionality of my rear hatch and glass. Camera is powered via USB cable that I tucked into the headliner and trim down to the cargo bay 12v power outlet. Camera records to its own 32GB micro sd card.

If you're interested: Here's the ultra fancy (haha) camera mount. You obviously don't need 10 of them, and you don't need to spend $6. Local hardware stores should have them:

Pic below shows what my rear-facing dash cam setup looks like. It's worth mentioning: the cargo bay 12v outlet is switched to the ignition, so the camera powers on and off at the same time as the car. I love it. My mobius camera is getting quite old now (2014), but still works fine. The standard threads on the hanger bolt will let me install any camera up there in the future.

Edit to include footage from Mobius camera for comparison. I was much happier with the field of view and quality vs the backup camera.
