Pro clip has the bracket with 4 screws. Then the ball snaps down onto it into two groves.

So original thread starter here and yeah i read many threads but wanted to see 2019 recent current products/idea. Thanks all, these are great but i wanted super low profile.
And i dont get the RAM mounts. They are a super PITA to me, maybe its an iPhone thing.
I initially went with $14 solution called wizgear, and I like it! I have not tested it off road, but it looks great.
Here are pics of mount only, phone mounted, and with charger cord. I still can not figure out how to embed photos in a post, nothing seems to work.

I have a proclip a-pillar mount. I just clipped it on, didn't use the 3m tape they provided. I wanted the ability to take it on and off if needed. Plus it fits so tight the tape isn't needed. Used a Scosche XL magnet mount on it and it holds my iPhone 7 with otter box just fine on bumpy streets.
The only downside of this setup is charging in this location but I rarely need to charge my phone while driving plus I like that it keeps the center of the truck uncluttered. If charging is an issue you can run a cord that pops out the drivers vent or in the gap just above the steering wheel.

I drilled a ram mount straight into the cup holder. Works great and it’s solid.

I added a RAM Mount into the useless coin tray. Took a little shaping to get it to fit right. Living in AZ with Toyota a/c, vent clips were out and I wasn't going to give up a cup holder either. I hate anything that mounts above the dash, I tried a windshield mount and not only did the phone obstruct my view but it was literally laying on my dash when I came out from work.

I just purchased this one about a month ago. I mounted it on the left side of the upper center console, between the console and the instrument cluster. Low profile, out of the way of the radio knob and air vents. My Droid Turbo 2 fits either vertically or horizontally , without blocking anything. I'll try to get a pic later.

I have an Ulanzi Phone Tripod Mount. Went with this since I could place it anywhere using either or both 1/4” and 3/8” holes or just good old 3M double sided tape. Although it’s kind of an eyesore when I don’t mount my phone, at least it’s not blocking a vent or distracting like when it’s mounted above the dash.

I went with a RAM Mount system and a mag mount. Best so far.
The mag mount itself I got from here. https://amzn.to/2M8nG5a
I've had the X-Grip from Ram Mount and although it's a great option, deployment was slow and needed two hands.

I agree with tomb_rnr, this is a great spot. However I used the Scosche foam tape mount. I previously had this mount on top of that trim piece but I tried the CD slot mount so I took it down. I didn't like the CD mount, it bounced too much, was too far out from the front of the rest of the dash, and it blocked my view of my display mod from OldRed as well as the top of the nav screen and the AC vent. I then went back to the Scosche mount but put it on the side and for me it's the perfect place for both vertical and horizontal display and doesn't block anything. Best is no holes to mount it.
