Stop the beeping!

Hello all,

Just joined the 5th gen club, upgrading my 96 Limited to a 2015 Trail. Liking it so far except for the obnoxious horn beep when locking and unlocking. Just got back from the dealer and they said there was no way for them to disable the horn. They were able to turn of the little chirps when unlocking and the dings for the seatbelt.

Is there any magical way to disable the horn when locking? I live and work in quiet places and having the horn beep needlessly is unacceptable. Have been able to deactivate it in every other vehicle I have owned including the old 4Runner. I have tried all the internet suggestions I could find.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

yeah, the dealer lied to you. i disabled mine on my own using the carista OBD dongle, but the dealer should be able to do it as well.

I am now wondering if I have a third party alarm system that is causing all the problems. I have a tiny black box next to the hood release with a little blue light that turns on when I lock the door with the remote or the door lock button. A really stupid setup since I can turn the alarm off by just pushing the unlock button. If it is third party, can’t imagine Toyota designing anything this stupid, then I just need to figure out how to disconnect it without disabling my engine and door locks.

Well if it turns out that you have an aftermarket or even a dealer installed alarm, I suggest you look into how it was installed. Look for poorly installed splices and fuse taps. Also see if your harness has been butchered. Even if it works, you could be looking at issues later on. There might be info on your paperwork about what it is. Sone dealers install stuff that remain deactivated if not purchased.

Might be a KARR alarm system. Some dealers have (and still are) installing this POS .

There have been several threads here about this. Check this link for some info:

Thanks for the link. Mine is installed in a similar location but looks like a different manufacturer. Have not had time to pull out the wiring but bet it is a similar hack job.

Don’t have the time to deal with disconnecting it myself. Think it would be better to have a dealer remove it or a local alarm/radio shop? Not sure how much I trust the dealer given that they did not even notice the aftermarket alarm that is almost certainly what stopped them from being able to disable the beeping.

I had the dealer where I bought mine new in 2016 remove it. It wasn't installed by them as they obtained the vehicle from another area dealer. However my dealer did not notice it when they were getting the vehicle ready for me. I discovered it when I got home and of course was mucho pissed.

I was told by the service manager they could remove it without any problem. I had them document that the POS was installed by a Toyota dealer and removed by a Toyota dealer in case there were problems later on. No problems since they uninstalled it, but still makes me angry that some dealers install junk like this and never tell a buyer.

Not that I trust any dealer but I wanted them to uninstall the alarm since it was on a new vehicle and I thought they would be more familiar with the Toyota wiring. Maybe try another dealer if you don't trust the one you bought the vehicle from. Can not say if audio install shop would be better--I've never used one. Good luck!
