I feel like it's reeeeeeally hard to make non-performance V6's sound like anything remotely interesting. Ford GT? Yeah, that thing sounds bad ass. 4Runner? eeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... I'll enjoy the peace and quiet.

Yeah I'm with you but it can be done. Nivida did a great job with their exhaust for the VQ35DE sounds like a fricken gtr.
It costs real money to tune exhausts for sound let alone power.
I'll swap my stock one out if I ever run into an excess of funds. Until then silent has its perks for sure.

It says TRD on it brah! Works in my favor because I have a TRD supercharger I need to sell.

Generally speaking... yes, cat-back exhaust systems have the potential to increase power gains. That said, the general consensus (at least in the tuner world) is that that parts are only a part of the equation, the engine/ecu tune more often than not needs to accompany it to really unlock that potential.
So in my mind, intake & exhaust without a tune just make noise, but some people just like to sound fast.

I went with a TRD exhaust on my Tacoma. Pipe diameter is the same and the muffler a tiny bit less restrictive. You may see 5hp at high RPM on the dyno but you won't feel it. Do it for sound (not that great sounding anyway), not power gains.

Hard to compare when the VQ is Nissan's go to, including in their JDM "Skyline 350GT".

Otherwise known as the infiniti G35. Not the same thing as the R35's VR38DETT.
Skyline name but not really the skyline you are thinking of. Most exhausts sound like dick on them. Nvidia put in the work.

The VQ35 is in many of their cars, including their sportier offerings. My point is that its different from the motor in the 4Runner because of the way Nissan did it, from sportier offerings to SUVs. The 350GT is exactly what I thought it was. No one has ever thought the VQ35 was in the R35.

If memory serves me right the old TRD exhaust on a gen 1 Tacoma was just a Borla made exhaust.

I'd prefer it over stock just because it won't drag on as much stuff. But for the 4.0 a silent exhaust is best. Maybe I'll just weld a 90º bend on the stock pipe.

Pretty sure that's what the new one is too.

Hmm never considered that.
You could always chop your hangers down a bit while your doing that 90 degree bend. Then you get silent with clearance (prob what I will do).

No matter how it sounds we are still dealing with a very slow 4WD SUV. Might as well keep it quiet...
