I see two models on Amazon
Did you get the notched or unnotched model?
Is it true that the turbo xl was the old model before it was relabled as Pro XS?

I got the Pro XS. It's un-notched.

I believe you are correct. The Turbo XL is just the old name. (It is virtually impossible to verify online. I checked. A lot. Even contacted Borla. You can imagine how helpful that was)

So un-notched is supposed to be for clamp install, notched is for weld on install. I'm sure the muffler shop can weld both on either way. I emailed borla asking which muffler they used for their two 4runner borla kit but @97BlackAckCL confirmed his touring kit is centered on both ends so it will not weld on to our stock pipes if going just for a muffler weld on replacement. I'm pretty sure it would be the same case for the S type kit.

That is the exact opposite of what Borla told me. Here is the email exchange.

I thought I composed a concise and detailed inquiry into their products. The response I got was (borderline insulting) VERY helpful!

Hi,

I drive a 2014 Toyota 4Runner SR5.

I have come across two Borla products which both fit my vehicle and I'd like to know the difference between them.

The Borla 40665 is the muffler I'm interested in. What are the differences between the Turbo XL and the Pro XS?

Also, the Pro XS I found indicates that it is "unnotched". What is the significance of an unnotched muffler?

I plan to replace the muffler only, rather than get a whole cat-back system. I want to do a custom side exit exhaust behind the rear wheel. Does this change which 40665 I should get?

Thanks for answering my questions.
Borla:

There is a lot going on here, but I am going to skip to the end. If you think 40665 is the right muffler, then it is.
Notched is for clamping. Turbo XL is just a long case Pro XS.
It seems Borla couldn't be bothered with anything but the minimal level of customer service, so they "skipped to the end". Wow, thanks.

In my research, I determined that the Turbo XL is the "old" name, as you mentioned. I'm no expert on Borla products, but you can also see in the Amazon links you posted that the case size for both the Turbo XL and the Pro XS are the same. Not sure why Borla says the Turbo XL is longer.

Perhaps someone here can verify the actual difference between a notched vs. un-notched muffler.

I just ordered the muffler. I'll post results after I install it. Thanks for the great write up and videos. These vehicles need a little more aggressive sound for sure.

I just measured the stock muffler and it's 23 1/2". The Borla is 19" so I guess your muffler shop added a piece of straight pipe. I'm thinking before the muffler. Unless the pieces in front and back of the Borla that get welded or clamped make up that difference?

Two short pieces were added to the inlet and outlet of the Borla. This made up the difference in length and provided a solid mating surface to rejoin the existing pipe.

The muffler came today. I'll probably get to it on Saturday. I'll post pics and videos of my install after it's in. Hope it goes smoothly!

Well I got it in today. It was not fun but part of that is because of my decision on how to get the 4 inches or so you need to make up the difference in length. Please excuse my pic and video skills or lack thereof lol.
My son suggested cutting open the stock muffler and seeing if there was enough pipe to use and make up the difference. There are 3 layers of metal before you get to the innards! As the pics show there is plenty of pipe but it's perforated about 2 inches in on the outlet side and about 3 inches in on the inlet side. I cut them off just before the perforations but thinking about it afterwards I could have cut after them and got a little more pipe inside of the Borla muffler. The perforations wouldn't have mattered inside the muffler pipe. There was enough to get a good seal though. A lot of time grinding down the welds on the stock pipes but it's all one stainless piece instead of going to the parts store and getting some kind of adapter that would be steel and would rust out after a few years.
You really have to remove the spare tire to get at the rear flange bolts.
The bottom nuts that are easy to get to are welded in place so you have to get the bolts out through the top. It's much easier to get access and leverage from the back of the truck but it's a bit of a pain to drop the spare.
I used a milk crate and a couple of 2x6's to hold the weight of the original muffler before I unbolted everything and took off the hangers. The new muffler is about 1/2 the weight of the old one ( I wanted to weigh them but forgot to) so it's easier to get it back in but using the crate helps hold everything in place while you bolt everything up and get the clamps fully tightened.
The hangers are all attached to the muffler not the pipe except for the front one so you lose them. I felt it was not good to leave all that pipe and muffler just hanging there so I made up a hanger from metal, perforated strap at the back of the muffler from the clamp bolt to the original rubber hanger. It's a little ghetto but keeps the tail pipe in the right place. No vibrations at least for the short test drive. I'll get a pic of it if you guys want but I'm too tired right now lol. What can I say, I'm an old SOB and 4 hours straight work has me tuckered out!

Finally the sound. I really like it. A good rumble when getting on it and at start up (the start up video I took sucked, I'll get another tomorrow) but not too loud at all and just a bit louder than stock when cruising. I'm really happy with it and recommend it for $104 plus two SS clamps it's a lot cheaper than a cat back and to me sounds just as good. More work though.
The pic of the front pipe shows the amount of extra pipe I got from inside the muffler. The shiny part is the extra part.
The test drive video would not upload for some reason. I'll try again later.

Has anyone done a single in dual out muffler on a 5th gen? Would love to have a tail pipe on each side.

I got the Runner on the parkway for the first time since the muffler install. I'm completely happy with it. No drone at all, almost stock at steady throttle, a bit of rumble with mild acceleration but best of all is noticeable power increase getting on the parkway and when passing and great sound. Not huge but it's definitely noticeable. Very happy with this mod.

Did my install tonight. I am very undecided, not sure I like it. Around town it's quite loud and not the good kind of loud. From a stop, even gentle acceleration it's quite loud, again, not the good loud. On the highway I am happy, no drone and nice and quiet. I do notice an immediate difference in passing power and I notice the engine seems to not work as hard. I say that because the engine definitely climbs through the RPM band quite a bit faster than it did with the stock muffler and it seems to do so much smoother. We'll see if there is any increase in fuel economy over the next week or two and I will make my decision at that point. Only issue is, if I want to go back to stock, I have to find someone local with a stock muffler laying around!

By the way if anyone is interested, the stock muffler weighs about 23 lbs. more than the Borla. Can you say better gas mileage? LOL!

If anyone was wondering what the inside of our mufflers looks like, here you go. Cut the muffler open to remove the stock pipes and gain length needed to install the Borla muffler. Chose to do this rather than using extensions which will end up rusting and failing long before OEM stainless pipe ever will.
