Infotainment keeps freezing and resetting
Hello all,
My infotainment unit recently has started freezing, then resetting. For the first few years of owning, never noticed this, maybe once. For the last few months, it happens more often. Now it is not uncommon for it to go through 2-3 freeze/reset cycles, taking 30 minutes or so to start working again.
At first it seemed to happen just when streaming youtube music via bluetooth, but now it will do it with nothing connected nor doing anything with it.
I searched for threads, but not find anything, if there is a thread on this, would love it. Kind of not wanting to go to the dealer, two hours minimum for anything down here in the Miami area, but guess would have to squeeze it during the next oil change if the dealer is needed.

My 19 does the same thing but only when connected to bluetooth. I took it to toyota 3 times before they ordered a new head unit that is going in next friday. It only took 8 months. They said it was my phone, which is a Note 8 saying its too new or too old, but there is a entune or toyota web page where you can go and it will show you what phones are compatible. Try a reset and see if it does it again it should be in the settings. just don't do the update and see what happens. I would still get the ball rolling with Toyota thought

I have experienced the infotainment center rebooting, and it seems to be related to my phone as well. More often than that, my phone gets disconnected from the infotainment center while still being plugged into the usb port.

I had similar issues on my ‘15. They replaced the head unit and same thing happened. It began happening after the tech entered info on the maintenance section of the head unit. Not sure why he started using it. I never asked him to. After clearing it out, it stopped locking up and resetting. They couldn’t confirm the actual cause, but ever since I stopped using the maintenance feature, things are great. I’ve used multiple iPhones with no issues.

Happens to me at least once a week. Coming from my 09 F150, I was appalled at the quality of the headunit/speakers. I will likely go with an aftermarket headunit eventually.

I drive a lot and I need my phone, I love the Bluetooth feature so I can talk while driving and not have to look at my phone. I never knew a 2019 brand new 4Runner would have such issues. and we didn't even start working on the steering wheel shimmy/shake at 60 mph. We are trying to fix one thing at a time. I have pretty much started spending my Fridays at the dealers while they try to figure out what is wrong with the 4R. not even 6 months old and so many issues. I expected a top notch vehicle when coming over from the Xterra but the Xterra did everything that it was supposed to do.

^ This.
I have personally entered maintenance reminders (oil, tire rotation...). Head unit would randomly freeze up (buttons unresponsive, couldn't lower the volume if something was playing, ugh...). If I didn't do anything, the head unit would reboot by itself and then work fine for an unspecified amount of time. Only way to "fix" it manually was to shut the truck off and restart.
Can't say it only happened when my iPhone was connected to Bluetooth; pretty sure it happened while listening to FM, too. It seems like the problem was worse when a reminder was active, e.g., telling me to rotate the tires every time I started the truck.
Check to see if you have any reminders set. Delete if necessary. Also, make sure you are running the latest firmware. I updated mine last year, and the entire system interface *instantly* became much snappier. All you need is a USB stick. It's painless.

Thank you for the replies.
I will mess around and see about updating the firmware, and see what else before bring it to Toyota to look at.
I do not do anything with it like set reminders or anything, just bluetooth to my phone is all. The map is up, but never touched it other than to zoom in and out.

In my case I originally downloaded the entune app suite, it worked but was very wonky. A little while ago I was poking around and saw the entune 3.0 app suite so I down loaded it and ditched the other one. Don't know how I missed it first time around because it's been out for 2+ years. The original entune is 7 years old but they are still updating it. For me this app is way better than the original one. ymmv.

Have you tried updating the head unit? You can do this by making a toyota ntune account, installing the app and connecting to the HU by BT. After a little while it will prompt you for an update/restart. Will do this a few times. Might help. Dealership can update it as well, but I'm sure they would charge.

Same thing happened to with 2015 TEP. Head unit would crash and reboot when I was on bluetooth. Happened rarely at first, then with increasing frequency to the point of multiple times per day. Using voice control over bluetooth was a sure trigger for it to crash. First the dealer tried resetting and updating it. When that didn't work they replaced it without much hesitation. New owner says it still does it very occasionally. And now only when using bluetooth and nav. Seems like bluetooth is the culprit in that particular truck.
I didn't even wait for it to start on my 19. I replaced it with a Kenwood with wireless CarPlay a couple weeks after I bought it and haven't regretted it one bit. Except I did have to buy a mirror with compass because I lost the cluster compass when I took out the factory headunit.
