Yes, that's maybe good plan. We will see what happens.

Thoughts on communication with the dealer and Toyota

A few approaches & considerations as you discuss things with them:


Write down in advance, or at least think through, what you really want in a perfect world. Don't limit yourself by what you think they will or won't do.
  • I want a Blue, 2020 Pro, XYZ options, and the dealer to swap out all the mods I have on my current vehicle (lights, tires, etc)
Don't negotiate against yourself.
  • Let them give you an offer first and ask open ended questions - as others have stated.
Consider a "line item" approach after the initial offer
  • e.g.: "that model works but what about the financing I had previously?" When you get an answer to that, move to the next line item "the financing make sense but what about all of my modifications?
Inside of the structure above, don't be afraid to tell them what you really want
  • "I really appreciate you guys doing all this work to get me into a ORP like I had. I'm just wondering if I wouldn't be better off in a Pro. Is that something we can make happen?"

Finally, know what your best alternative is to whatever they are offering and decide what's best for you personally.

Sorry to hear about this. I’m in a new 4Runner because of a lemon buyback on a 19 Subaru earlier this year. Long story, but ultimately, due to engine concerns, Subaru deemed my car a lemon and offered 3 options: 1) Replacement like-kind vehicle keeping existing loan terms (basically a VIN swap), 2) complete buy back to include any out of pocket money - car payments, tax, tag, title, etc., but not including after market modifications or, 3) keep the repaired vehicle and take a cash settlement offer. I ultimately chose #2 and came back to a Toyota product.

The entire process took about 95-100 days. SOA was fantastic to deal with and I will tell you that being kind and polite to the dealership and the manufacturer made the process smooth and easy.

Good luck and be happy that you’re not in a Chevy and dealing with GM on this issue.

Wow, I can't believe being honest, patient, kind, and communicative got results instead of threatening to pistol whip the GM and call Toyota corporate. Crazy.

Glad you are getting results @pumacat24 Sounds like if you just decide what you want your new trim level/color/etc to be, they will likely make it relatively easy on you if you just continue the same approach you've employed so far. If it were me, I wouldn't stress too much about the time and gas lost to date. 99+% of people with a similar issue would've never got this far. I hope you get some peace of mind in a new T4R soon.

14 successful years of specialty retail sales will give you the patience and knowledge of how to accomplish anything you want within reason. Pistol whippin’ pissed off people don’t really get anywhere.

Trust me, in private, I screamed, I cried and I researched every inch of the internet until my eyes almost fell out (without avail, of course). I literally annoyed everyone with every detail of my story trying to figure out some clue that may fix it.

My husband, my coworkers and all of my friends are so over this and ready for this process to be over so they don’t have to hear me ***** about it. Haha! Believe me, I am too, but I feel like I’m in a really good position at this point and I can finally breathe.

My dealership could also genuinely see how badly I wanted my ORP fixed too. It’s my dream car.

Toyota has not contacted my dealer yet for the paperwork so I have no idea how long the process will be, but I’ll be certain to post a pic of my new ride... hopefully within the next month! *fingers crossed*

Actually, my sales guy just told me today that the 2020s will start arriving at their dealership at the end of September.

Maybe Toyota will take their sweet time and I get a 2020.

Actually, I'd rather get a stellar deal on a 2019 Pro and get it ASAP!

I do get to drive my car until I get my new one, but the front end wobble is back now that the alignment is back to factory spec, so sooner is better!

I suggest multiple test drives in the prospective new vehicles before signing any thing.

If they can't fix it.......what's to say the next one, 2 or 3 you get won't have the same problem.

This is what I was thinking, too. It would be terrible to have to go through this again. Long and varied test drives. Good luck!

I had a 2014 GMC Sierra denali that was exchanged. I came out of it well pleased.

It had flaws in the paint.

I know, right! I am definitely planning on taking an extended test drive, but for me this issue didn’t begin until around 5k so there’s that.... Toyota is Repurchasing my '18 4Runner TRD ORP...

Which is why I’m going to try to get into a Pro since this issue does not seem to be prevalent in that trim level.

so i have had the same issues off and on for quite some time and its back in full force. i recently noticed that my lower control arm bushings have lateral play and i'm going to try to get them replaced under warranty. i'm hoping that this solves the issue--i wonder if shitty/inadequate rubber bushings have been the culprit all along. I'm considering getting dirt king LCAs to remove rubber bushings from the equation entirely.

I'm just down the road from you in Greenville! I'm in my 4R because of a similar situation with the BMW I had before this.
In my experience, there is a formula they use to determine the value of the "lemon" (You've no doubt seen what that is in your research---original price of the car divided by 120k minus the miles you put on it.) and they don't care what you do with that "credit"--be it replace with the exact same car or upgrade.
I feel sure the dealer will pitch in to help with swapping over your mods, etc.

I hope this is the issue for you and you get it replaced under warranty.

How many miles do you have on yours?
