So I've been without my 4Runner for 22 days now and here's the long story short.

Back in April after my 5k service, my steering wheel began a high frequency vibration between 60-65mph and a slight front end wobble @72+mph.

Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth with the dealer and Discount Tire they finally 100% verified that it was not the wheels or the tires and I wasn't crazy, but Toyota Regional wanted to call it a "natural characteristic" of the vehicle without even looking at the vehicle... Load of BS.

Met with owner of dealership, Dave Edwards, of Dave Edwards Toyota and he helped me get the Regional Tech to actually look at it, lo' and behold, it stumped him and he admitted it was a legit problem with the car.

* Side note: If you live anywhere around the Greenville/Spartanburg area of SC and are looking for a Toyota, Dave Edwards is the place!! He promised me that if Toyota could not fix it and stopped helping me that he would get me out of my car no questions asked. I'm so glad I bought my 4Runner there. *

Speed up to today, 2 techs from Toyota, the same Regional, and North America tech from TX have replaced:
• Power Steering Rack
• Both Axles
• Wheel Bearings
• Front Differential (which I was told today this was replaced due to a completely separate issue... I know... WTF?)

Then about an hour after I got the latest update that they were waiting on the arrival of a 5th gen steering wheel damper, I got a call from Dave Edwards who proceeded to tell me that Toyota had called them and told them to stop working on the car and that they were going to replace it.

SO NOW I NEED ADVICE!!!

• Has anyone ever had their 4Runner replaced by Toyota before?

• What is the process?

• Do I need an attorney?

• Am I going to get shafted in some sort of slick big corporation way?

• What about all of my upgrades that I already made (including buying new expensive tires that we thought would fix the issue)?

• What about my special financing that I got which is no longer available?

• What about some sort of compensation for using 2 tanks of my gas, having my car for 22 days and all the GD anxiety I experienced and probably over 100 hrs of research over this stupid issue (I'm not trying to take advantage of Toyota, but damn.)?

• Do I have to stay in the same trim level?

• Can I at least pick out my new 4Runner?

• Can I take it for a super long test drive (2 other ORPs I drove off the lot during this were had the same steering wheel vibration already, but not the Pro.)?

• Can I move up to a TRD Pro or maybe TRD ORP w/KDSS (seems they aren't having this issue quite as much)?

What questions or what verbiage am I am missing here to get the most I can?

I didn't ask for this, really all I wanted was for them to fix my car and be able to issue a TSB for all the other people have this same issue.

Give me your 2 cents, advice appreciated!!
I have a 2016 Trail (27k) and recently noticed a vibration around 60mph but it’s more prevalent on grooved concrete roads. On asphalt it’s almost nonexistent.

How strong was the vibration?

Pretty strong. Plus I have a front end wobble at higher speeds too. Something is just not right which is why they are going to replace it.

Our roads are mixed around here and it does it no matter the road surface. Although... I haven’t tried 60-65 on a dirt road. Toyota is Repurchasing my '18 4Runner TRD ORP...

I was driving to work this AM and a new Limited was right beside me. My wheel looks like it is having a seizure and her was a as steady as a rock.

I can email you a HD video if you want DM me your info.

I sued Subaru. Before I bought my 4Runner.

They have a 3rd party who normally works with the dealership. Check the miles and check for codes. Right there and then they will have a check already made out. Sign a couple papers and it's done. Then whatever price you agreed on before signing. That's what you'll pay.

I took the cash deal and walked across the street and bought a 4Runner. They gave me back the original price I paid. So I got to drive my WRX for free basically for a year and a half.

just a heads up OP, someone else is having the same issue as you (as well as an issue with the radio):

Just dropped of the 4Runner at the dealer and left in a rental.

So kind of a mood point for you at this point but I think I may have nailed my vibration issue down. It seems to be 60-65 at it's worst 65-70 not as bad.

Stock suspension here donno if you are too. But, what I noticed is when the front end is unloaded a bit (when you accelerate to pass or merge 2x4 not a limited) the vibration is pronounced. But, if I just cruise at those speeds I don't get vibration. Wondering if a proper lift will correct the "issue" for me. I'll try and reproduce it OMW home today and see if I get the same results.

@Mutant138 I just tested your theory and got the SAME vibration between 60-65 mph regardless of the following:
- acceleration
- deceleration
- cruise control on
- coasting from 65 down
- braking

I have a stock suspension, BUT I have a major suspicion that it could be fixed with a suspension upgrade to a monotube/more firm suspension. I mean, nothing else they have completed to my 4Runner has fixed it.

I told them that the only people I've found in my hundreds of hours of research have been people who upgraded their suspensions on their own, but what do I know? I'm not a mechanic, it's just a hunch and there's absolutely no guarantee it would be fixed.... but it seems to make since to me which is why you don't really hear this happening with Pros the way it is happening with SR5s and OR/ORPs.

That blows... please tell us exactly what your suspension upgrade consisted of?

That's interesting to hear actually despite the results of my test.

OMW home I tried to replicate it and got no vibrations. I also have noted I don't usually have it on my way home for reasons I didn't previously put together. OMW in today I only got the vibration at particular spots on the road (that look to be a bit washboardish). I'm also starting to think I only get those vibrations at those spots and that too was not something I previously put together. I will have to test it again and see if it's literally the terrible stocks suspensions inability to handle those kinds of surfaces.

Based off what you said, what I'm seeing so far with my tests, I think a properly engineered suspension will in fact make a difference in my case and many others. However, I do not get the symptoms quite like what you describe, and at this point I'm tempted to say it's two different issues. One that should be a TSB and one that's just lazy, cost effective, eco, pedestrian safety compliant suspension engineering.

I'm betting a portion of people complaining about this issue are just experiencing the suspension unable to handle certain uneven road surfaces at 60-70 mph.

I think you're on to something..Are you all experiencing this feeling in the steering wheel or the seat? I've noticed in mine on a particular stretch of road at 40 mph that I feel what I'd describe as a vibration in the seat. guessing due to the road having a washboard texture to it..doesn't happen anywhere else for me..

Idk about my seat. Certainly on actual washboard I feel it in my seat if pressures are up. At 40 MPH washboards will be rough especially with kdss since those sway bars are pretty beef.

I get it through the wheel. I thought maybe it was the steering rack damper tension springs at first but now idk. Not a crazy vibration either, but definitely not very refined feeling like you would expect from a 40g vehicle.

No point in speculating further tho. I'll keep laying down the miles trying to recognize a pattern. Then a lift.
