Toyota is Replacing my '18 4Runner TRD ORP... Advice Requested!

In my experience, there is a formula they use to determine the value of the "lemon" (You've no doubt seen what that is in your research---original price of the car divided by 120k minus the miles you put on it.) and they don't care what you do with that "credit"--be it replace with the exact same car or upgrade.

I feel sure the dealer will pitch in to help with swapping over your mods, etc.

Good luck! Hope you get it resolved quickly!

Yeah, I’m hoping that I receive a full credit plus a little comp because I had only had the car for 4 months when it started. It’s been a hell of an anxiety rollercoaster too.

Since you’re in Greenville... do you go off roading anywhere around here? I mean like simple, have fun, utilize 4wd and not scratch or flip my car type. Lol

We went on Horse Pasture Rd. up to jump off rock at Jocassee. It was amazing! But I think it’s closed now due to all that rain we got at the beginning of the year.

If I’m remembering right, the formula is a bit more complicated than that, at least in NY. My experience was that the regional representative (I honestly don’t remember the guy’s title... it’s been 22 years so things may have changed) had the ability to negotiate a buy back. In my case, Toyota offered me the full purchase price of my “lemon” against any new Toyota product. He also made the new vehicle available at invoice price, there was no reduction in value calculated for my use of the T100. In your case, since you decided against another BMW, I guess there would have to be some sort of calculation for the amount you’d get back. My first transmission started slipping when the truck had less than 3,000 miles on it (and was less than 3 months old) and I think that factored in to their decision. I was also without the T-100 an astounding 57 days in just under 10 months and was stuck driving an Enterprise compact car rental. I was pretty understanding until the third breakdown left me stranded on I-90 for two hours. At that point I told the dealer I didn’t want the truck back and they put me in touch with the regional rep, who was helpful and took care of the swap. The process was pretty seamless and easy in my end, I picked out the new Tacoma and the regional rep took care of all the paperwork and communicating with the dealer and Toyota finance. Once we had agreed on the terms of the swap, it took about a week to get in to the new truck. It was a long time ago though...

I think the "formula" probably varies by state. In SC, it is the manufacturers choice whether to replace or buy back. I wanted a buy back, they actually gave me a replacement, which I drove directly to the Toyota dealership and traded for my 4Runner. (Well, not directly, I waited a week for the registration to arrive on the replacement BMW)

How many 4runners are on the road? Go to the JL wrangler forum for some really bad builds.

Yeah I believe invoice pricing might be the right comp for mine as well.

Anyone know how much less invoice pricing is typically compared to MSRP for 4Runners?

I was at 22 days. I can’t imagine 57!!

Mine is a “lemon” but I did not have to file a claim. This is a Toyota voluntary buy back or replacement I guess.

Thanks for your input!

That looks amazing.. I am from Charlotte, I am adding this drive as my one of the go to places.

Sorry about your car, I have the same wobble and didn't think they'd replace the truck over it.

I know it’s good to be open to other vehicles, but I need the interior space and towing capabilities of the 4Runner.

That’s why it’s my 3rd one, and soon to be 4th!

No problem. It is a stressful process. I don’t envy you a bit, I’d rather have a perfect 2018 rather than go through all this and hope for a perfect 2019. OTOH, given the issues you’ve had, I’m sure it’ll be a relief to get in to something new.

Your invoice will depend on the options. You can get the invoice price at kbb.com or edmunds.com. If it’s a voluntary buyback, which they’re probably doing to avoid branding the title a manufacturer buyback, your timing on the new one might be perfect for late summer rebates as well. I doubt it’ll take much time once the dealer and Toyota agree to the terms of your buyback. Id just make sure you’re getting a brand new car, not a manufacturer demo or anything like that. My guess if your car will be shipped off someplace and sold. Save the VIN and check on it in a few months through Carfax. I’d be curious to see if the title is branded or not.

A few generalities:

Manufacturers are loathe to buy back a car as a lemon. Those buybacks need to be reported. They would much rather do a trade assistance - essentially the same thing but the trade assist requires that you get another vehicle from that manufacturer.

Pain and suffering generally doesn't apply - don't even mention it unless you can document a direct relationship between the car and the "pain and suffering".

Most likely, they'll offer you the identical car with the same options and just change the VIN on the paperwork with the bank and DMV. You may be able to discuss an upgrade if the identical car isn't readily available or where an option package change removed an option you had.

The dealer might be talked into moving mods over - but - unless they are Toyota blessed parts, they are under no obligation to do so.

Remember that your goal is to get a car that works - you don't want to win the lottery and you want to (as you are now) come across as a reasonable person who just wants to be made whole.

Good luck and keep us posted. Even with an NDA, you can always come back here and say "resolved! Everybody is happy" with a picture of your new ride.

I have a Toyota Supplier discount, which warrants Invoice minus $500 on any model. My '19 TRD Pro had an MSRP of ~50k with port installed options, my invoice was 45132. My discount also applies to port installed options, meaning I get those at invoice as well. This is about 3% above the dealer's cost of the vehicle. I'm not sure how invoice compares to MSRP on other trim packages, as I only ran the numbers on the one I purchased.

Correct, you want to stay with the 4runner. The new jl is for people that are really committed to buying a poorly designed product and don't care.
