This is definitely one of the questions I had, when I bought my 4Runner. My Pearl White 2016 Limited is definitely "Pretty", and on the one hand, it is nice to have a nice vehicle. Something I can take a client to dinner in, and not be ashamed of as I ask them to give me $$. And I got a SMOKIN' deal (20% under Bluebook), since I bought it from my Sister.

On the other hand, I didn't buy a 4Runner to drive around the city... I intend to USE IT. So, I will be looking for mods that make sense in the long run. Nothing too crazy, I don't want to spend $30k in mods... just enough to make it do what I need it to do. And no... I don't plan on taking it to Moab any time soon.

I like the idea of going to 17s with AT tires. I like the idea of a better roof rack. But I will likely not install a lift kit, or even a stiffer suspension. I just don't need THAT MUCH. Not in this vehicle.

But I will definitely be looking for mods to the LTD that make sense! So any suggestions or starting points would be welcomed!

In my opinion the Limited is just as capable as the part time 4WD except in the most extreme off-road conditions. Multi Terrain Select, Crawl Control and Rear Differential Locks in the higher end version gives them a few more tricks up their sleeve to to get out of more difficult situation.

However, I think the Limited is better than the part time 4WD when driving in bad weather conditions when on paved roads. Having the ability to switch to AWD is a big advantage in my opinion. It gives you a AWD capability that allows you to drive normally. Even though the part time 4WD can switch to 4WD you alway have to worry about potential binding. And let’s face it, I can say almost everyone here spends more time on paved roads than off roads. So that’s a big plus for the limited.

if i had a limited, i would get F/R ARB lockers on 34's with 4.88 gears, and some king extended travel shocks w/700 lb springs, and some aluminum skids, front bumper, steel rear bumper, and some sliders...

If you're not going to do a lot of offroading I would just put AT's on the 20's so its still capable unless you are planning to air down. You will still be more limited by the clearance of the limited bumpers since they are lower.

No need for a roof rack unless you plan to actually put something on it like tons of gear or a RTT. If I didn't have my RTT I wouldn't have put a rack on because it is extra weight, less aerodynamic and would have saved $2k.

Doesn’t sound like your use case really calls for much in terms of needs, everything would be based on wants.

I’d probably go for 17” wheels regardless as I found the low profile 20s to be harsh. Your tire options also open up exponentially.

Plenty capable, no lockers really necessary using ATRAC, and still looks slick when cleaned up.

Used to offroad it with spacer lift, DuroBumps, and its stock XREAS just fine. Last year I put on Bilstein 6112/5160's (later Ironman FCP rear shocks), Ironman HD rear 2" springs, 1.5" wheel spacers, and Dirt King UCA's for more track width, clearance and load capacity.

I have a TRD Off Road but next time around I'll probably get a Limited for these reasons.

The "tricks" like Multi-terrain select, crawl control and rear diff lock are only useful in a very narrow window. In a stock 4Runner, most trails are easily handled in normal 4x4 mode. Some trails can't be handled no matter what. There's a tiny window between these, trails that can only be done when you use these "tricks."

The Limited can pretty much do everything my TRD Off Road can do except trails that require these tricks, and trails that actually "require" them are rare. I turn them on from time to time but in all honesty I would be able get by without them. Plus, the Limited does have ATRAC, and it's pretty darn close to these other tricks, even the rear diff lock. There would be very very few obstacles that you could pass with the "tricks" but not pass with ATRAC.

And the Limited is much better on-road in bad weather conditions. Bad weather conditions are far more common than trails that actually require the tricks.

The big difference between the two is 17" wheels versus 20". If I ever get a Limited I would look into switching to 17's.

Edit: I should add that I would prefer KDSS to XREAS.

Limited's are very capable, they'll get you to the mall and soccer practice with the kids.

you are proof that limited is the only way to go....thar aint a trd on the planet that drive on a virtually 90 degree rock wall and not tip over. are those "special" tires?

He probably filled them up with water like the rock crawlers do for better traction and lower COG.
