Help deciding on a 5th gen

I’m a current 3rd gen owner and will be moving up to a 5th gen soon. I’m looking at two rigs at the moment and would like the opinions of peers in the 4Runner community.

1) 2016 Trail Edition. Non-KDSS. Bone stock. 36k miles. Cloth. Dealer is asking $32k. I know there’s not a lot of negotiating wiggle room on this one based on KBB values.

2) 2013 Trail Edition. KDSS. Properly lifted two inches. BFG KO2s. Leather. 50k miles. Dealer is asking $29k but I know there is quite a bit of negotiating wiggle room based on KBB values.

Any input would be greatly valued. Thanks!

Are you dead set on a "trail" edition? Because for $32k you can get a brand new 2019 possibly a 2020 SR5 4x4 with a warranty. (this is what i did)

a little more can get you a brand new 2019 TRD off road.

The used prices are stupid on these trucks. If you are spending that kind of money for a truck out of warranty and a few years old...why not just buy a brand new one for the same or slightly more?

This was my thinking also, but the prices for new around here are silly. The 2019/20 SR5 around here is around $38k-ish and the Off-Road around $43k-ish.

Depends on your use. KDSS is great but if you want LT of a big lift it's more trouble than it's worth and get in the way.

I have KDSS I love it. Handels great on and off road. Weight the +/-.

That being said I agree with Grip. For those prices get something with a warranty.

Of the two you listed I would go for the 2013 TE but I wouldn't pay anywhere near that price for it. Dealer down here last year sold a super clean 2011 TE with 90K miles on it $18,990. I'd come to Texas and buy a SR5 Premium 4x4 new for $35-36K or a regular TRD OR for $38K before I gave north of $30K for either of those used and out of warranty vehicles.

I agree with a few others here. Do some serious research and when you find the one you want you can possibly fly, buy, and drive back home. That $500 plane ticket can save you a lot of money if you go somewhere that they aren't asking crazy prices and are willing to negotiate.

Are you planning to lift? Stay stock? If stock, get the kdss. Live near Seattle, if so the 4runner prices are crazy. I bought new for about the used pricing at the time.

As others have said, those prices are near a new 5th gen, I'd go that route and get a new car or save up and stay in the current ride until you can afford a new car.

As other have said, shop around, but pre-facelift Trails (10-13) are harder to come by and tend to ask for a premium. If you prefer the look over the 14+, I'd say bargain down and if the price is right, go for it!

I'd take the 2013 Trail and get the best price you can.

Trail Editions did not come with leather (at least mine did not), I'm just curious how it got leather, was it an option?

Gotta agree - the price on the 2013 is nuts. The 2016 doesn’t seem so bad. Im sure there are a lot of folks in this site who would be willing to check out a truck for you at local Toyota dealers. I truly believe if you’re patient, you could find a nearly new SR5 CPO 2018 with less than 10K mikes on the clock for $32,000ish. Then chip away at mods slowly if you really want to.

What suspension is “properly lifted?”. That would be the deciding factor for me. Is it bilstein, OME, Toytec, or just some spacers thrown on? A pre-2014 Trail Edition is going to be a unicorn in 10 years. I’d go for that unless you plan on a crazy long travel setup down the road. So if no long travel KDSS is well worth it IMO (Totota wouldn’t put it on Land Cruisers if it was just a gimmick). You know from having a third gen that 50k miles is barely broken in, heck I have 75,000 on my 2015 and it drives the same as it did off of the lot.

Also check the frame for any rusting...that may be a deciding factor as well.

Good Luck and Go Hawks!

The Trail's don't come with leather in those years, so my guess is aftermarket seat covers. I have a 2012 Trail and it has that weird plastic-y cloth that's supposed to be water resistant.
