It's like the old Timex commercials -- it takes a licking, but keeps on ticking.

Your engine is fine, I personally love the way it sounds. If you hear that noise get louder under load then maybe you should worry. This is not a Hyundai engine, do your oil changes on time and your engine is happy.

Thank you for confirming!
I do like the throaty - ness of the engine. I thought it sounded a bit “tinny” but to your point will keep an eye out if it ever gets louder/changes.

Unfortunately I really can’t hear the noise enough to tell what it is. But with my vehicle I have a tapping/ticking noise that sounds like it’s coming from the lifters.
I tried using multiple types of engine cleaners. I’d added Mystery oil to my engine oil and I also used the type you add to your engine and run it for 5 min just before your oil change. I also used multiple types of fuel additives/cleaners every time I filled my gas tank for several months with no noticeable reduction to the ticking noise. Also, after extensive research online and comparing my vehicle engine noise to other 4Runner, it appears the ticking/tapping noise is normal. I’ve had my vehicle for about a year now and I haven had any engine issues.
One thing that I did notice that reduced the ticking noise significantly was putting in heavier oil. So I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason the 4Runner engine has a ticking noise is because of the thin oil Toyota recommends with the engine. I think they recommend it for improved mileage. I get about 17-18 mpg but when I used thicker oil it dropped down to 15 mpg.

My new 2019 TRD OR has the little tick at idle as well. That doesn't other me. You should hear my wife's Hyundai Santa Fe. It's got injector tick that's alot more noticeable and it's been like that since new as well. One noise I thought was different on the 4runner is the massive rush of air at the front of the vehicle when you first start it up. These things must have awesome electric fans!

I would hear that and think something is wrong. Glad I know it’s nothing to be concerned about. My new to me SR5 has the most minimal knock/tick ( like I have to REALLY) listen for me to notice.

Personally I love the sound of the rockers at low idle in the drive through between walls, the click clack sounds they make and the way you can hear the timing chains whirring away, lets you know everything is turning! Enjoy it LoL. Like someone said - the only way to quiet that down is sound deadening of which there isn't much up front. With the temperature changes we experience in these parts I wouldn't stray from 0W-20, small oil passages in these engines are likely the reason that weight is specified so I'd rather not have thicker oil in it unless you live in climates where it's never a cold start.

Yeah mine sounds about the same. It’s louder on the right side like it’s coming from the lifters or fuel injection pump.

That’s the air injection system you’re hearing on start up.

I still suspect some debris is stuck in there.. engine gulped a bit of sand once and sounds were louder ever since that day.

2012 here too and we do NOT have the air injection. Mine seems to be high speed idling with the colder temps and I do not remember it doing so last winter.
Also seems a bit louder until warm.

Anyone using a 5W20 rather than the 0W20 called for? I live in MD so we get 0* days and we get 100* + days. Just curious if the 5W20 made any difference in the way the engine runs. Seems like the 5W20 oil is also half the price of the 0W20 in terms of Toyota brand oil.
