What tires\type you had before switching to Falkens? And what Falkens tires (size|type) you had balancing issue with?

I've had Terra Grappler G2's on my 2010 TE in stock size for over a year. I am very happy with them. Great traction in the rain, quiet, smooth riding, etc. Only bad thing is they are a little heavy, but it's not like I am taking off the vehicle very often. They replaced a set of Michelins when the left rear blew out the entire sidewall in the middle of nowhere.

You are running LTC. So I am not surprised they balanced on first try.
Same with Wildpeaks: balancing P vs E.

Just reading through this thread overwhelmed that i have to start over researching for the best tire. It took me 10+ years to find the 2 best tires for cars. Now i have to start all over and its going to drive me nuts.
Ill probably do a winter set and a summer set of tires on 2 sets of rims i have. But that may not be the solution like it was for my car (set of summer set of winter).
When i get closer to needing new tires ill check in with the community first.

Yeah. It is very hard if the vehicle is used in multiple weather and surface scenarios regularly.
If I were in your shoes, I would look for a P metric AT that does great in rain and on road generally. They all will handle dirt roads and most trails anyway. Just make sure you have a good spare if you do happen to get a puncture.

I don’t understand what you are trying to say. I’ve also seen people complain about balance issues with load range C KO2s.

I had two sets of the earlier ATS, two sizes, on my Outback totaling about 53,000 miles. It left much to be desired in cornering and braking. I am sure GO15 is much better but I have read a couple of people making similar complaints to those I used to have.
No idea how it does on 4R but, again, just fail to see any appealing feature vis-a-vis the competition.

Very interesting, thanks.

Yes, you are more likely to lose a P-metric, but P-metric tires hold their own very well at or near street pressures. You can play with 28-33 psi depending on need, etc, I just normally use 33 on and offroad, but actual airing down should be limited to deep sand and similar.
Using a P-metric tire gives you a better tire literally 99% of the time. Unless you plan on driving difficult obstacles made of sharp granite in AZ or equivalent, there is no point in going LT with a third ply in the sidewall. Just going LTC is not necessarily a guarantee about anything here in AZ.
For most people, getting LT tires on 4Runners is the equivalent of getting a 4Runner to drive a fire road once in a blue moon. Total overkill.
Second, not all P-metric tires give you equal shot at strength. I have not been able to find anything conclusive but here is a list of P-metric tires that make a case for themselves in the strength department:
Goodyear Adventure with Kevlar, for Kevlar in the tread and "durawall" sidewalls.
Falken Wildpeak AT3W for high ply turn-ups simulating 4 ply sidewall and strong shoulder protectors
Nitto Ridge Grappler for strong shoulder protectors
Wrangler Duratrac for strong shoulder protectors
Wrangler Ultraterrain for strong shoulder protectors
General Grabber ATX for strong shoulder protectors
That's about it. All other P-metrics I can think of lack the strong shoulder protectors necessary to keep rocks at bay.
Third, rain and wet.
Look at Discount Tire Direct and search by vehicle and then select tire and then select Treadwell. You will see third party testing for stopping distances in dry and wet.
Best dry and wet braking
outstanding dry and wet braking:
Wrangler Trail Runner
Wrangler Adventure with Kevlar
Falken Wildpeak AT 3W
All three of these stop within feet of each other.
For your needs, I recommend the tire I use, the Wildpeak AT 3W. It is cheap in 265 70 17 yet great on and off road, does great in the rain, I have total confidence in its strength everywhere outside the Sonoran Desert and equivalent, and does well enough even in those harshest environments.
My rear tires are 7/32nds now and had no issues with all the Montana rain we experienced in July. They still perform very well offroad as well.
The tire makes no noise in 265 70 17 (can be noisier in 285) and is very comfortable. Only now, at 7/32, I am starting to feel a slight loss of comfort, which happens to all tires when tread gets shallower.

Ok now. I do love my AT3W's for their traction characteristics but after 30k they are louder than the 37" Swampers on my Jeep. They are more of a ***** to balance too. 2-3 tries each time so far to get them "acceptable". They do wear like iron though and grip very well at the same time. Great tire overall but it's not without its flaws. And yep I run stock sized 265's.

Yes, I am getting to 30 as well.
I have got no balancing issues on my P-metric but I, too, am exploring other options. I do not like it that I spend only 10,000 miles at 10/32nds or higher. I may just keep buying Wildpeaks as they are so cheap but it is all TBD at this point.

I've been using BFG ATs for over 20 years. I've never experienced the wet weather issues that others have experienced. I put stock sized BFG ATs load range C on my 4Runner. I could hardly wait to get those noisy P rated factory tires off. I'm getting over 18 mpg for normal city driving. I'll get around 20 mpg on the highway.

I would hope that the extra 6 lbs per tire doesn't have cause a significant drop in MPG. I've looked at some other lighter tires like the Toyo OC ATII but they seem to be similar to the stock Dunlop AT20 that I already have.

I had E-loads on my F-150 and they were terrible in the rain. I can't find any reason why the C would be any better but I wish that were true. Falken uses the silicon compound in the SL load but not the E and that is supposed to be the reason why the SL handles wet roads better. They clearly state that the E loads won't handle slick roads quite as well. I have seen nothing about the silicon compound in the KO2s in any load range.
This video explains the difference between sl and E load in the Falkens at the 2:00 mark. I am not getting the mileage you get now btw. about 17 in the city. Maybe 20 on the hwy if I take it easy
YouTube
How many miles do you have on your KO2s? Mine started to suffer after about 10k. The rubber compound just seemed to get really hard.

pulled the trigger on wildpeaks in stock size for 2016 4runner with mild lift, it was a HARD decision and about drove myself crazy over whether to get them or not with all the talk of out of round- balancing issues. IMO they are the best looking with K02s a close second. Getting them installed tomorrow at discount tire and hope to not regret it ...

Seems to be a pretty common theme that at roughly 25-30k you should expect any AT tire to start getting loud. I had the same issue with my KO2s and others have noted the same. Guess it's just something you have to accept. Cost is more of a factor if you switch up at 30k.
