Navigation Map Date Update

For my 2018 4Runner, why does the latest navigation map data update, part number 86271-0E074, need to cost $1000? (862710E074 - Disc, disc player - Genuine Toyota Part)

Does anyone really pay that?

Why does Toyota charge $400 a tire to replace the TPMS unit? They charge that much because they can. I totally agree, replacement part costs are unreasonable for all things Toyota, and I used to work for them.

For the map update, how long will it really be good for? I have a portable Garmin unit that updates all the time. Road construction is a constant so you're never up to date. I'm happy with the 'stick on the windshield' Garmin free lifetime maps unit I have.

Have you looked to see if there are any after market update possibilities?

If this is a DVD that updates your map, you might be able to find it one the gray market. I updated our Honda a while back with a disk I bought on eBay that was way cheaper than the dealership. Not sure if that's still a thing but I imagine it is if you look hard enough.

Isn't that part the CD player unit? The Nav updates are on an SD card that is inserted in the SD card reader. On my 2016 is is on the lower right of the unit.
Dealers sell the SD card with update. I don't know the current price (maybe a few hundred dollars) but it is nowhere near $1000. There are online sellers charging much less but you have to look carefully at the date--some are already expired.

Based on this video the update procedure seems pretty simple. Seems like just a matter of getting the currect SD card. Anyone have leads for 2022?

The title is wrong, that is the right part number. It is an SD memory chip.

All the others available on Ebay or Amazon appear to be boot leg copies despite their claims to be OEM. Those on Ebay or Amazon are in the $25 to $50 range.

The only time I have ever used the NAV is when my phone doesn't have a signal and usually that's far beyond metro areas so I doubt that update is worth it. Like others have said I would look for that SD card on ebay and if you can not find it then use your phone for metro areas and the NAV for rural areas. Alternatively you could get some other GPS enabled deice like Garmin or Magellan both of which have devices that work off road as well.
