Easy choice, get a TRD Off Road and throw a Magneson on it. All your wants are met, and then some.

They both have their pros/cons but I'd give the edge to the GX for the OEM LED headlights, vented seats, second row heated seats, second/third row HVAC, BSM and parking sensors.
The GX definitely wins out in a head to head if you want or need the better features and appointments. If having a utilitarian SUV that does well off-road then the 5th Gen wins the day.

I'm trading my 2013 4Runner in for a GX460 in the spring/summer. We have an older 470 and it's WAY nicer to drive with the extra power, quieter ride, and more comfortable seats.

Thumbs up

I considered a GX before I bought my Ď19 Pro but would have only considered the older GX470 due to more clearance and more durable/longevity V8 than the 4.6. The 460 just sits way too low. I guess it all comes down to what you will use it for. Soccer practice:GX, off road:Pro. From a purely financial perspective the Pro may hold value better.

If I were offered above what I paid for my '19 Pro (invoice minus $500) I would take it and jump right into an Army Green. My preferred dealer told me the Pro's are order only, which I know isn't the case because I picked my '19 off the lot.

Too bad the 4Runner doesn't have the 4.10 rear end (like the Rubicon) and the 6 speed tranny of the GSX.

GX 470 is one of the all-time great Toyota/Lexus products, IMO, and a vastly better package than the GX 460. If you were asking me this question at another point in time, GX 470 vs 4Runner, I'd go GX 470 and never look back.

The GX 460 is a lot softer, worse departure angles, it's more disconnected, it got heavier so the V8 feels less powerful, it could run on regular gas (GX 460 requires premium) and quite frankly I really dislike how the GX 460 looks.

The biggest powertrain difference between the GX 460 and 4Runner now is refinement. The V8 is not a powerhouse, but it's adequate and smooth, and the 6AT makes it feel lighter on it's feet in stop and go driving. The GR V6 can be a little more garish at times, and the 5AT generally makes you step on it to get power, and even then, there are times where it feels dead or barely responsive. The acceleration numbers and MPG are very close, so what differentiates them is the experience behind the wheel.

I have a good bit of time driving GX 470, 4th gen 4Runner, GX 460 and 5th gen 4Runner, and I'd rank them as follows:

1. GX 470
2. 4th Gen 4Runner
3. 5th Gen 4Runner
4. GX 460

5th gen 4Runner has the same bones and basic capabilities as the 4th gen, but they made the every day package a little more livable - more comfortable, more space, better seating position, more trims and variants, etc. 4th gen was more cutting edge and compelling in it's time, but the 5th gen has its own charm.

I'll stop carrying on now

There is no order, just allotment.

People complain about the "only a mother could love" look of the 5g Limited, but the GX look is a real concern for me. It looks ok as a street machine, or if you're going to rip it all off and load up ARB bumpers that's great, but I find it a difficult comparison based on the exterior trim.

*A superficial complaint, I know, and have never owned one, but my observation

A deal breaker for me in the 2020 GX 460 is the outdated infotainment and instrument cluster. If they brought over the updates in the 2020 4runner, I would probably choose the GX over the 4runner. But another thing to consider is the barn door vs back window.

Now if they put the 5.7 in the 4Runner...
Those numbers may be right, but the power delivery and that little bit of extra torque made a big difference to me. It just took less effort to lug the 4runner around. Mine was an 04 V8 SE. I do miss the engine and the current 4.0 doesn't get much better mpg. I'd like to see a V8 back in the 4Runner, but I don't see Toyota doing that and it might be a bit too heavy for a balanced off roader like it is now.

My ideal version would be a V8 limited 2 row 4Runner with KDSS and the e-locker/MTS setup. I'd buy today if it were available. Or a GX setup with the Prado Adventure Package.

I spent a lot of back and forth between the GX and 4R when buying mine. In the end it was the utility benefit of the 4Runner with more cargo space in the 2row option and the weight difference along with the locker/MTS. The GX requires a lot more body cutting to get it into trail ready condition. And it's a lot of additional cost to setup with front/rear lockers because most don't come with MTS. I think you can only get the MTS/Crawl with the air suspension on the luxury package.

The biggest plus of buying a 4Runner is that I could trade across now very easily with almost no cost. The GX depreciates so much faster that I can basically swap out for a GX whenever I want without too much issue other than the cost of removing all of the mods from the 4Runner that would then be installed in the GX. I've been pretty seriously considering it for a while. But my biggest reason not to is that I'd rather just go with a LC200. And I haven't found the right one used yet. I also struggle with accepting 13mpg. So possibly when the 2021/22 new version comes out with a v6 hybrid I'd jump. If the MPG is significantly better it would go a long way toward swaying me. So for now I'll wait and see what happens there. Or wait for the 6th gen t4R/GX platform to see what looks best.
