I guess at the end of the day, there's only so much room on one list for the same vehicles.

The article was written and the vehicles chosen based off of the vehicles that they have personally owned and used as well as those vehicles that can still be found in good shape and for reasonable prices. As you can see compared to the old list some 8-9 years earlier, it has changed based off of what is now readily available in the second hand market.
The 2010-13 GX is more sought after than the 2014+ because of the grill and simply due to price. 4th Gen 4Runners are now 10+ years old at best and most are worn out, the 5th Gen is a much more sensible purchase at this point and can be more readily found with lower miles and in decent shape.
I like the list for the most part, it's reasonable except for the Ram 2500/3500 diesel and the 7.3L Excursion. Neither of those vehicles are widely used in overlanding nor are they cheap to buy and maintain. They are however growing in popularity recently due in part because of the AEV Prospectors and the Excursion simply because of the allure of the 7.3L in a large SUV. Either way, both are huge and that can be a detriment off-road. I have owned a 2500 and multiple 250's, they are hard to squeeze down most trails .
