With the amount of rain I see here in FL, I'm really pretty wary of water intrusion in the roof. This system seems to at least have attempted to address the flawed way roof racks mount to vehicles in general.

I really wish you guys were more local to me in the south. I'd bring the truck in and have you guys do the install.

This should be an easy install. Do-able with 1 person and easy with 2 people. If you can turn a bit set you should be able to install this rack.

Yeah, he's right. It's easy, and as they tweak their instructions, it will be almost auto-pilot.

And we get plenty of rain up here in Seattle ...

It's not really a function of how difficult it is for me. It's that I want it done right. ie, perfect. Exactly as designed.

I've read too many horror stories of people installing various roof racks, only to discover years down the line that there's a hole the size of a dollar bill eaten into their roof from all the rust. IMO, that's just as bad as a minor car accident in terms of damage to the vehicle.

Just wish there was a fool-proof, 100% perfect way to deal with these roof racks so that they don't leak. This looks like the best design of all of them, and really it's just some compressed rubber.

It's 8 bolts. I'm not sure how difficult that should be...

The only reason why there have been "horror" stories is because some of the other roof racks use metal spacers and silicon sealant. Some also require drilling into the roof and installing rivnuts. This rack requires NONE of that. It only uses the stock roof mounting bolts. It should be dead nuts simple to install and shouldn't require much for it to be "perfect".

If you follow the instructions step for step you will have no issues installing our rack. They have already been updated to sort out any of the confusion stated above. Compressed rubber is all you need. It is how every seal on your truck works, e.g. gaskets, door seals, firewall grommets etc.

Instruction Revisions

I've spent some time this week trying to highlight some problem areas in the instructions. You guys have provided a ton of advice in regards to the Crestone install and we can't thank you enough. It is sounding like there are some small problem areas that needed just a little more clarification. I would love to hear your thoughts on the updates being that you have all installed a rack system and understand the process.

We are also looking at expanding our line up of install videos once we are located in our new shop.

Finally got around to installing mine this past weekend. Install went smooth, reading this thread helped with any questions that came up. The updated instructions with torque specs took the guesswork out of the bonded washers. Front feet weren't too bad, took a couple tries to get them right but nothing crazy. Rained like crazy soon after I finished and no signs of water intrusion.
Definitely recommend this rack.

I don't have a rack yet but will be looking to get the Crestone during your next sale. Those instructions look well done and professional. Looks like an install manual the big box players like Yakima, Thule, ARB, Rhino Rack would produce. Great work.

I have a very odd 10 month update.

So far the Crestone has been functionally fantastic. I have no complaints about the roof rack as a system and the aesthetic wear and tear thus far (which has been great by the way).

I don't know if anyone else has run into this issue with the black hardware (which I have on my white 4R), but when it rains the streaks that come down the sides of my car from the bolt points on the crossbars leave discoloration on my paint.

After it rains it just looks like dirt / soot streaks down the sides of my car, perfectly lined up with the bolts. They usually come off when I wipe the car down.

There was a week here a month or two ago where it rained for like 9 days in a row, so I waited til it stopped raining to clean the car. This time, I couldn't get rid of the discoloration.

I'll take pictures of it and upload it tomorrow. I'm not sure what might have caused it. I did a little bit of googling and it could be the black oxide coating wearing off, but the fact that I can't get it off my paint is a bit annoying.

I suppose it's less of an issue with cars with darker paint.

Can i buy everything for the 5th gen except any 47” long cross bars?

I just want the side plates, mounting brackets, and full height wind deflector.

I just placed an order for a rack. Super excited for it. It's going to be a long wait!
