Ram mount installation on dash trim

I'm about to try the Ram mount installation on the passenger side central piece. Before I drill holes in a $75 part as an experiment, has anyone done this and been dissatisfied with the results? I plan on using it with probably an 8" arm to mount a full-size iPad for Gaia maps. Is it solid enough for that?

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but I used the floorboard mounted RAM Mount to setup a phone mount. It's a pretty sturdy piece of aluminum, and if you brace it properly would support a tablet pretty easily IMO (might have some bounce to it).

EDIT- I guess the reason I posted this was because I was reluctant to put holes in the trim

This is where I put mine. I used 2 washers behind it but it has been steady for my tablet so far. Just enough clearance to shift the transfer case.

Thanks! I was originally looking at that but haven't had the best luck with flexible arms like that and was worried it would vibrate being that long. I'm not gung ho on mounting the Ram ball but this piece isn't a huge cost to replace if I hate it. Still, I expected that piece to be $20-$30, not $75.

Thanks! I guess that's a mini tablet? I don't think that X-Grip works with a full-size. I wouldn't necessarily be against getting a dedicated iPad mini for this but was planning on using my Air 2 if possible.

It is a mini tab. I never used this tablet anymore so I stuck a large SD card in it and use it for downloading GPS for back road stuff.

Yeah, it looks like a better fit than a 10" tablet too.

This works great for me. No holes to drill, holds the tablet rock steady.

I had looked at those but wasn't sure how solid they were. But I'd have to give up 50% of my cup holders! Down that was does not lie marital bliss.

I had seen yours at some point. I like how the ball is stealthier if not used. Seems like a tablet would cause too much obstruction though.

you could probably use a longer arm and have it off to the side more

I finally got around to knocking this out today, using the side-trim mount method. I think a full-size tablet is too much though. I had to use a double-arm (using the shorter arms and a Ram ball coupler) which added a bit of vibration. Plus the big tablet really obstructs some of the controls. I ended up adapting my Proclip iPhone cradle to a Ram ball and think I'll just run that for now. It's a convenient one-hand dock and I think is still enough pixels for running Gaia. I might plus-size my phone when my upgrade comes up in the fall anyway. I don't have a mini-tablet to try but as seen in the photos above that's probably the sweet spot for getting a big display without crowding things. Wish I had tried this before ordering the Bad Elf GPS I needed for my iPad... at least it's cheap to return.
