for what purpose?
IMO, having the pistol in a safe in your truck is almost like not having it at all. Is the bad guy (BG) going to wait for you while you reach into your safe to get the pistol to ward him off? Probably not unless he's got the IQ of a rock or a banana Of course, the safe is necessary if you don't have a CCW or if you're traveling through a Shall-Not-Issue state.
Not trying to insult you, just trying to understand the logic. Better to have it close by and not need it, than to not have it at all is what I live by. Not a gun nut, just aware that crazy $h!t happens in the best of places (church) and at the most unsuspecting of times (broad daylight).
To answer your question, no have not heard/seen of any pistol safes, but I do recall seeing in a Springfield XD forum a picture of someone who took a Kydex holster and screwed it to plastic siding of the center console near where the driver's knee would be. I think that was just for when he was in the car and didn't want the pistol in his IWB holster, but still wanted easy access. I guess he removed it from that console holster when he left the vehicle.
Hope this helps somewhat!

x2. I do however have a safe in my minivan...because on a car trip, i will need the safe in my hotel room (if none avail) to prevent my kids from touching it. And my safe in the minivan is just a simple box with quick access buttons.

I agree that having a gun in the safe while you are in the car is a bit pointless. However, having a gun safe in your car can be very beneficial as well, especially if you need to leave your vehicle for any reason with the gun in it. All it takes is a second for someone to break into your car, but it's better for them to make off with the stereo or insignificant personal belongings rather than your gun. If a gun safe is mounted securely and operating properly, most petty thieves won't have the time or interest to break into it. You definitely don't want your gun being stolen! So with that said, I think a gun safe in a car can be a very good idea.
Alaskaman has a gun safe in his 4th gen 4Runner. You can try to do a search on the forum or PM him for more specifics. If memory serves, he did a write-up on the install.

Great point! And exactly why I will be following this thread to see what others suggest about a particular safe. At the moment, I am forced to leave my pistol in my vehicle when I go out to eat at a place that serves alcohol, even though I would never have an occasional beer while carrying - absolutely pointless to drink even a drop and carry.
Luckily that restaurant ban is being repealed as soon as the Governor signs the bill.

Bump
Sorry to bump an old thread, but as a new 5th Gen owner, I'm also looking for anyone who's found a proven solution to this.
Despite the earlier debate in this thread, having a safe at times is a good option and the GunVault safe I've had in my SUV's for years will not fit in the new truck.
Has anyone installed a safe in their 5th Gen? If so, what type, and where did you put it?
Thanks in advance.

Foam cut out ,false bottom, center console, done deal.
I have them in all my vehicles that have a center console.
My Tundra Crew Max has a holster screwed into the floating divider
Cocked, locked and ready to rock
And this is in the Socialist Republik of Na_zi Pelosi Kalifornia. Where you can't even fart without attracting liberal attention.

I would always rather have my gun on my hip, but unfortunately there are some situations where you can't legally carry it with you. So a safe in your car is a reasonable solution to a difficult situation.

Excuse my ignorance, but is it legal to carry a handgun in the car in most US states? In Canada, we're lucky if we can use a rifle on the farm, and owning an handgun would be like trying to sneak out the door with baby jesus.

I had a chance to play with the Console Vault mentioned above and it is definitely a quality product. Like others, I'll be placing an order as soon as they make one exactly for our trucks.
In the mean time, I'm considering one of those single pistol safes that is rectangular and flat. Not much bigger than a large size auto. I'm wondering if it can be mounted to the floor under the 2nd seat, much like where Snooperstyle stores his tow gear: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/attach...k-img_2276.jpg
The first issue would be finding one that is as flat as possible and then the 2nd would be finding out if we could bolt it down to the body of the truck at this location without damaging whatever is under this spot.

Yep - in most states we can. It varies from state to state and between individuals (those who have a carry permit, not a felon, etc).
But unless you've got a badge that says you're a cop, no permit is good in every single place, 100% of the time. Hence the option to lock the gun in a safe now and then.

Pistol Holster Mod (Springfield XD Firearms)
It places the holster INSIDE the center console on the removable divider. That way it's out of sight AND you can simply take out the divider and attached holster if you need it for other storage or if you find a more permanent solution. the divider you can get for about $20 at your dealer.. bit pricey for what it is, but not unafordable.
