AGM Battery recommendations

Have researched the web and several links on this page but want some recent recommendations on which AGM battery is the best for running winch and lights on 2017 ORP. No plans to put in a refrigerator.

Northstar vs Odyssey vs Duracell. in Group 24M or Group 34M size????

Thanks for any input

Hi Kuduhunter,

There are two that I've used, "see below":

...and...

I'm using the "Odyssey Extreme", and my wife's Camery has the "Exide Edge"! Both (IMHO) are just as capable! Here's a description of the Odyessy Extreme in my 4Runner: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/2012950-post1.html Best to you,

rig

I was leaning toward the odyssey extreme due to the lower weight than the Northstar and the good reviews

I thought the consensus here was that the 4R does not charge AGM properly and thus this kind of battery needs extra care?

I have dual Odyssey group 25s (genesis system) and a buddy has a single Northstar in a JK (don’t know the size). Both are holding up, but there are several things to keep in mind:

1. AGMs have a different charge profile. They require ~14.7 volts to fully charge. The 4Runners alternator only supplies about 13.5 volts which will only charge the AGM to about 85% depending on ambient temperature.

2. To keep the battery healthy it will need to be charged to 100% using a charger with the correct profile about 1-2 times a month. I chose to permanently install a Victron solar controller (which has an AGM profile) inside the engine bay and then I connect it to a 12 volt power supply, basically mimicking a 100w solar panel. This leaves me the option to add solar down the road if needed for roughly the same price as a stand-alone charger.

Others and myself have used a voltage booster and have not had any issues

I'm running a 2 battery setup using Northstar AGM batteries group 34. Very happy with them so far. I also added a diode booster fuse which delivers a charging voltage around 14.5 V. Once in a while I'll just hook up my battery charger which has an AGM charge algorithm and give them a charge but to be honest I don't need to do that but I have the charger so why not.

+2. Has 6 year warranty. Just installed an auxiliary Group 34 to replace about 8 year old Diehard Premium AGM. X2 also seems to be popular over at expedition portal forum. I also have the voltage booster installed on my truck for slightly higher charge voltage. And have CTEC charger I can hook up periodically if I want.

Isn’t the Victron MPPT a buck controller… I have a couple and they won’t boost a DC-DC voltage.

As long as you are feeding it greater than the battery voltage this should work as this would be typical to what a solar panel would be doing.

I've used Optimas for 15 years or so, I recently made the switch to Odyssey and I'm in love. I'm actually looking at getting the same Odyssey that I have in my 4Runner for my Acura, they're awesome quality batteries.

Just needs higher voltage, and you can stick with stock size if you're not running a fridge or anything

I run the odyssey 34r size and so far it has been great. I do plan to add a 2nd later when I get back to doing more camping later in the year or early next year.

I do not have a fridge but do run my roof rack lights off it when camping and power my phone charger, lights and a small fan in my RTT.
