I had my T9 for 2 weeks now. The only real bugs are with Apple CarPlay and I don't use it as I'm an Android user. This head unit is the best move I've made since buying my 2015 Limited!

What a great idea. That is one of the best looking scosche kits I have seen. I wonder if that would help on the TRD OR dark grey metallic bezel? Would be more subtle but might still break things ups a little.

I'm going to be doing an experiment. I have another factory navigation headunit on its way. I plan on taking the center screen out and trimming the plastic around it to fit a new aftermarket headunit into it. The hard part is going to be with the knobs and buttons. I'm not too circuit board savvy so this will be the tough part. My goal is to at least get all the buttons/knobs to light up with the dimmer properly, even if they don't actually control anything anymore. Best case scenario is that I can somehow get a few of the buttons to work, maybe if I can wire them into the matching steering wheel controls.

I'll be really interested to hear how that goes. If you could get the volume knob to work that would be huge. You just can't replace that with buttons.

Do you use the Apple CarPlay option? I’ve heard it slows down the unit and that’s the real hesitation I have with buying it.

That's going to be the tricky one. I have to figure out how the signal goes out from the knob and see if I can get it to send signals through the steering wheel volume adjust. Not sure any of this is possible though. I'll update on here once I start digging into the radio and how things work more.

Phoenix Automotive is also working on a custom HU for the 5th Gen 4Runner. They have awesome headunits, with lots of good reviews.

That would make a good option, but I just wish the big brands would do something similar. I don't really want to mess with an Android based head unit.
I have the Sony XAV-AX7000 coming in today that I'm going to play around with. I decided to go with this particular one because it has the built-in amp and is one of the best looking aftermarket headunits IMO. I didn't want to mess around with an amp either. I plan on putting new speakers in but will just be doing a budget build when it comes to that.

I know what you mean. I ended up going with a Kenwood DDX9906, but wow -- I should have gotten the Sony XAV-AX7000 -- 100w! not bad, and great looking interface! Post pics once you get it installed

Bad thing about the Sony is that it doesn’t have Maestro compatibility, but that wasn’t a deal breaker for me. Wireless CarPlay would of been nice too, but I like to plug my phone in to charge it anyways.

So I did some playing around with a stock radio faceplate and this is what I have so far. I got the radio to fit after some cutting, but I don’t like how I did the black bezel around the radio. I’m still messing around with what to do with that. I have some matte black vinyl wrap coming that I might use on some parts. The buttons do not function, nor was I going to be able to get them to without some serious custom circuit board work. I don’t have any backlighting yet but have some lights coming in that I’m going to try for the buttons.

Here is the scosche kit painted to match with the interior of the bezel painted flat black in the metallic grey dash.

I’ve been kicking around the idea of upgrading to after market. Floating heads have become the new normal for a lot of mfgs and they grow on you after being around them a bit. The Alpine seem just a little to “square” for our rigs but pioneer announced a few new units coming out that are a little more rectangle, thinking this is the way I’m gonna go. Will have to wait until these actually hit the masses. I will be mounting in the bottom slot of the trim panel to avoid the vents as much as possible.
