I am really worried about the future of that trail given the combination of popularity and accidents.
Do you know that it is possible to legally drive it uphill? But during special events only.

It is a Two Way Road till you get closer to the switchbacks, then it becomes a One Way Road. I believe there are "Special Events" where you can drive up it. But I am not 100% sure about that.

Yes, that's what I was referring to. They used to happen annually, not sure if they still do them.

So, your saying the trail that the 4runner flipped over on is a state road or Highway? Like it is patrolled by the State patrol, sheriff or local police department. If there is a problem on this state Highway/road the EMT and fire department can respond? Please explain

I have never seen Black Bear Pass in particular patrolled by any local or state law enforcement up top (that doesn't meant that they don't) but I have certainly seen NFS Rangers up there and on all of the other passes on the Alpine Loop. All of the passes in that part of Colorado can be traversed by bone stock 4x4's except for maybe PoughKeepsie Gulch. Others have noted in the past that it is treated as a road (not a trail) and therefor in the past has been covered by insurance companies in similar scenarios, of course YMMV. I know I called and checked with my insurance companies for both my 4x4 vehicle and my dirt bike both times I have gone and they both said that I would be covered in the event of a similar incident.
This isn't a closed park off-road system, it requires a tagged and registered over the road vehicle or a stickered OHV to traverse it legally and there is no cost to a user other than the OHV sticker for off-highway vehicles (non-plated dirt bikes and SxS's). I find it hard to believe that you would be denied coverage under those circumstances unless otherwise outlined within your particular policy. Of course there is always an exception to the rule.

That is not why it flipped. This trail has been done by full-size trucks, Ford Raptors, and 3500 trucks. That 4Runner was top heavy with an RTT and some jerry cans. Driver was probably inexperienced as well. I mean he's still running the stock oval nerf bars. Can't imagine he's been in too many off-camber situations if he still has those. But hey an RTT looks good up top.

Lol, she's going to stick around until I can be tempted into something else. For the time being she's safe and I have already started ordering more parts for her this week.

YIKES!! FunTreks rates that pass as difficult. To my beginner abilities and stock 4wd truck. It's not even on my radar yet.. FWIW, runners still look cool upside down.. It's better than on fire I guess, but then again, fire is kinda cool too... Ok, now I'm just trying to make light of a bad situation.. Sorry dood in the upside down truck. If I was there I'd help however I could. Maybe a chinook? charlie baker 1-9er we've got a 4 Richard on it's 12 o'clock. roger that charlie baker, we'll send the dancers thumping on your 20 asap. <<

The road had mud, snow, water, & loose rocks. He was 2 cars in front of me.

All roads/passes on the Alpine Loop have had the same conditions this entire summer (it was far worse last month), that still doesn't justify the flop. As others have already noted, it appears by the position of where he ended up that he hugged the right side a little too much and likely rode up the embankment causing the tip over once he cut the wheels to the left. Who knows for sure what all led up to this incident, but one certainly can't blame the melting snow and runoff for this incident.
The Alpine Loop can be a very docile and easily traversable experience, but there are areas where it can easily go south in a hurry if you aren't attentive and pick the wrong line, but from my experience there on both two wheels (much more sketch in some instances and easier in others) and four, that particular spot on BB is far from treacherous.
Regardless, I feel bad for the owner/driver, no one wants to see this type of incident and I hope that everyone involved was ok. Sadly, like noted in the last BB flop thread, incidents like these will only help fuel the fire of those looking to close that pass and maybe even others to future vehicle travel.

i don't know where the myth started that offroad accidents aren't covered by insurance, but unless your policy has a statement excluding something it's covered. just read your policy, they follow standard language for the state (and pretty similar between states) so it's really easy to skim to the part where they list all of the exclusions. everyone needs to read their policy, you can usually get the full documents online.
you can't find out if your vehicle is covered offroad by googling, you need to read your actual policy. nothing you find on google will be helpful at all, the only thing that matters is what it says in your policy documents.
the closest I have ever had to anything that excludes offroad driving was a statement about speed exhibitions or something. i've used geico, nationwide, and farm bureau and so far no exclusions for offroading.

Wow - Great Pics! Can't imagine driving on roads like that but I'd love to with someone, or a group, with experience - says the guy in Florida . . .

On or Off road?
Just curious, because I see videos of 4x4s bashing and rolling on YouTube on BLM designated named and numbered trails and it never occurred to me that the cars were insured. I just assumed it was guys who really liked losing money while their buddies cheered them on.

Yes.
I was a 18 year old in an 2003 mustang mach 1. Just put new nitto tires on it. doing a burnout/launch in a parking lot, and drove over a curb and crashed into a light pole. $10k damage and they didn't total it. Got it fixed, and traded it in right way to a dealership to avoid increase in insurance costs.
