Seems like the same thing that happened to the FJ.

We had to turn around. We were able to back up onto snow the dozers had pushed off the road. We essentially backed up onto what would have been the cliff side into the creek, but snow was packed hard enough to support the vehicles.

any tips on how to avoid this situation? would the driver have been able to tell he was mounting the wall? is it solely because he mounted the wall that he flipped?
planning this exact trip, just doing as much research on how things can go right or wrong.

Slow down, pay attn & keep the IFS lined up right. He was top heavy, moving too fast, pass front riding up the wall with driver front dropping down, & mixed road conditions.

FWIW, comprehensive insurance is for the bank, not the owner. It practically always covers the damage regardless of where or why. Usually only things like war or terrorism are excluded. Lenders want security. And they lobby well. So in most states insurance law requires very expansive coverage for the comprehensive policy. Insurance companies don't stay up at night worrying about occasional $40k claims. It's the hurricane with $500,000,000 worth of claims they worry about.
Bummer about the flop. Very lucky he didn't go off the edge.

If I recall that spot I told my passenger to make sure I was close to the wall but not on it.
The staircase is slick even when dry due to loose rock. Getting too high (Colorado), being top heavy, speed, and wheeling alone look like they were all factors in this roll. Too many negatives that could have been avoided. There are always folks willing to wheel Black Bear...make a friend and gain a spotter.

Not saying this would have saved the driver in this case but as mentioned above avoid stabbing your brakes when things get tippy. Vehicles don’t like abrupt inputs (Brakes, throttle, steering inputs etc). This applies to everything from racetrack driving to wheeling a rig off-road. Brake modulation is key.
If you feel the rig tipping really badly turn into the lean and if it’s really severe give it some gas. Seen plenty of saves that way.

One of the main guys to coordinated the recovery said he is fairly sure the rack and tent stopped it from rolling/sliding any more and also dampened it a little bit.

As someone states later on, insurance speak for "off road" is literally over ground with no dirt road etc. Riding around on dirt roads is not off road. They will most assuredly cover something like this on any kind of dirt road.

I'd imagine you can't just get a crane in there. Will a tow truck make it? And if so, how would they load the vehicle?

They drilled some 1" bolts into the rock and used cables and come alongs.

drilled into the rock with a hammer drill, 1" bolts, come alongs and cables to flip. Brake function check, fixed one off bead tire, and drove it down the mountain.

I have not seen a lot of recovery techniques but I am pretty impressed with what I am seeing here. Definitely shows that I have a lot to learn.
Being a desert person, I am a bit curious how this would end up getting an anchor point without any rock to drill into.
