Best 6x9 front door speakers? Many questions :)
Hey guys,
I just purchased my 2020 TRD ORP and love everything about it except the crappy audio. So I purchased a set of the kicker twitters but my bigger concern is the muddy low mid and bass. My plan is to swap out the speakers over time with the same high end/high quality speakers and then get an amp if required.
I have thought about getting the OEM Audio Plus Speaker only upgrade but I don't know how their speakers compare to let's say... Infinity or JBL, etc.
Also, does anyone have experience with the Focal IC 690TOY or Focal IS 690TOY? How do they compare to OEM Audio, Infinity or JBL?
Sorry so many questions.
Thanks in advance for any info or advice you can offer.

I'm also curious about the Focals.
I've heard that the weak point is the stock head unit because it has such a low output per speaker channel but I can't speak any more other than what I've read.

I haven't upgraded mine but in reading some of the other threads I seem to remember replacing the speakers in the dash was one of the cheapest easiest ways to get better sound. Also sound deadening in the doors can help without buying anything.

Yeah, that is why I will be installing the kicker tweeters this weekend.

I am curious how the 2020 headunit drives other speakers. A lot of the speakers I have been looking at are very sensitive like 92-94 dB.

If you are going to run an amp regardless, then buy the best speakers you can afford (non drop in). If you plan to keep the stock head unit, just upgrade the dash and the front doors. The rear doors and hatch do not make much of a difference.

I would prefer to not add an amp. That is why I am upgrading just the tweeters and front door speakers to start. I kinda assumed the rears wouldn't make much of a difference and I am hoping if I leave them in place there will be more power to drive the fronts.
Have you updated your speakers or added an amp?

My initial reaction to stock audio quality was the same as your's. I had to really boost the mids on the EQ to hear anything. I ended up replacing the stock door and dash speakers with the Focal IS 690TOY system up front and the Focal IC 165TOYs in the rear doors (yes, they fit without issue). I'm very happy with them and run the EQ flat now. I have not been able to compare them to OEM Audio+, Infinity or JBL.

I suggest taking a look at the kit below. There's better options but this takes all the guesswork out of it. You can get just the speakers. The higher level kits add amp(s) which all plug into the OEM headunit. I love mind but wish for more bass.

Hey Mike,
That is just the kind of first hand knowledge I am looking for.
Thanks

Hey Whippersnapper,
So did you do just the speakers or the whole kit with sub and amp?

Everything. Just waiting on the 2nd sub to become available for current owners.

I upgraded all of the speakers. The only really noticeable difference were the tweeters and front kick panels. The hatch was the worst probably because of the acoustics of hatch panel (just slightly clearer). For no amp, doing just the front you should be fine. Funny story, I took my system in for an upgrade at an audio shop and he rejected me and said why waste money its already pretty decent vs spending $1000+.
