Just speakers?

So we have a high end audio shop local to me that does incredible work, but I’m not trying to break the bank. I tried out the focal integration series speakers on a simulated stock head unit and it sounds 100x better than stock, for $600 installed. Anyone else tried just a speaker upgrade with satisfactory results? I generally am a full system kinda guy but I’m not impressed with the head unit options in appearance for this vehicle.

My OEM Audio+ system didn't work properly at first so I had it bypassed. Their door speakers were running just off of my Pioneer headunit. It sounded a million times better even without full amplification.

Where in KC? I've been thinking about the Focals. I was looking at Santa Fe Audio--new complete system including a sub they wanted $3600. About half of that was install fees. For me that is just throwing away money come trade in time. If the Focals sound that good, I would be in for 600.

After reading and researching this before I bought the 4R I bought some Kicker dash speakers for the WRX, plug and play, 10 min job. Unreal how much they improved the sound. I tested it by not telling my teenager. She almost immediately asked what I changed.

Since I have added a Kenwood head unit (DNX696S) It also really helped.

So if the dash speakers sucked that much I presume the rest do as well. I have been researching for replacements. But as much if not more important is sound deadening for the doors, hatch, rear cargo area, etc. the 4R has zero.

I did sound deadening on another car and it was unreal the difference with keeping the stock speakers (Bose)

Check out this thread, most people that have installed these are pleased with them. I have them w/amplifier and OEM HU, but they were still a huge improvement with stock HU power.

Focal IS 690TOY Front Speakers Designed for Toyota

I personally would not recommend paying $300 to have them installed. The main draw to these (and the price) is because they're direct fit OEM replacement, very easy to install. Just pop the door panels off, unscrew & unplug OEM speakers, plug & screw these in, pop the door panel back on (the dash tweeters are even easier, the little grille on each corner of the dash pops off for access). Took me about an hour taking my sweet time. It would take a professional shop about the same amount of time, or less, to take that $300 from you.

Independence audio. They have the 6.5 focals all the way up to the top end $2400 a pair without install. They are great people to deal with for sure and do amazing work. We talked about several options including the front doors rear doors and dash (tailgate left stock) and adding a JL amp and 10w7 for ~2k installed.

True. I usually have done all work myself and likely will do it again. I think I may get all the focals installed and see what I think. The 690 toy’s have a decent amount of bass?

Go with a set of quality 3.5" speakers in the dash. The tweeter upgrade is nothing but a waste of money. You're still left with nothing but a tweeter and a huge frequency gap. The 3.5 coax makes a huge difference even when leaving all other speakers stock. As far as that Focal kit goes, don't waste your $ Overpriced just like the OEM Plus kit. All you're paying for is the convenience of plug and play. You can get much better for much less money. Convenience is something people are willing to pay way too much money for. Something I will never understand.

With the taco tunes (among other) harnesses, its just as plug and play. Easy install and way more options.

I did just the focal drop ins at first and was not impressed at all, sounded tinny and crappy without an amp. Also made it so I had to increase the volume to get the same volume level as stock.

Ended up going TT full setup for a sub and the focals

I have decided on the speakers and started looking at the sub options. I am starting to think maybe an underseat sub/amp combo for fill would work out good as I am not interested in thumping bass that all my neighbors can hear. good quality clean sound mostly rock music.

Does anyone have the alpine PSU-300FRN in their rig? 45w RMS is respectable enough for me in conjunction with a mostly plug and play setup that takes up no usable space in the 4R.
