OEM bottle jack vs Pittsburgh 8ton

My OEM bottle jack got damaged a few months back, so I recently purchased an 8 ton Pittsburgh automotive Hydraulic bottle jack as a replacement as it fits well in the factory jack location. I am not sure if the stock one was a hydraulic or screw type. Does anyone see any issues with this setup. Thanks.

Did you try it out to see if you have any issues, leaks and that it goes high enough (may have to add a block) to get the wheel off the ground?

yes I tried on the rear wheels and I was able to get it off the ground. I didn't find any leaks yet but I will check again.

It is definitely a stronger jack and may possibly go higher than the OEM jack. I would cut some 2x4's to fit in there as well just in case. I've actually been meaning to replace both of mine with something like this.

You might also want to check that the jack will fit under front and rear when the tire is flat. You can make some measurements without having to air down the tire.

I doubt that jack is going to lift high enough or compress short enough. I'm sure it's plenty strong and safe. The OEM jack is a telescoping design. It goes to about triple the collapsed length. The hydraulic bottle jacks only extend to around double the length. It would depend on what you're using it for and where. On flat dry ground it might work. On softer ground or snow it may prove to be too short. And it may be too short in the front to get a tire off the ground. IMO - I'd go to a salvage yard and find and OEM toyota one. They're just a better design. I think I have about 4 of them floating around my garage. They're dirt cheap.

Edit: For reference - the OEM jack is 7.5" collapsed and 16.5" fully extended. (I measured one on my shelf from an FZJ80 - I think they're similar). The HF Hydaulic bottle jack says 8" - 15 5/8". I'm having a hard time believing that. But if it's accurate, it's closer than I thought. Might work well.

Most of those bottle jacks have threads on the very top part that screw up prior to even using the actual jack. I know my father in law has a few around the farm for wagons and combines(obviously bigger than 8 ton, I think one is a 40 or 50 ton one) and they go about triple their height when fully engaged. Just something to check out.

OEM Toyota is not necessarily a better design or jack for that matter. The wife and I had a blow-out at 80 mph on I40 on our way to Memphis. Blow out was caused by a piece of metal in the road kicked up by a truck in front of us.

I used the OEM jack and just had the right rear wheel off the ground when the jack failed with a loud bang and the truck fell. I was half way under the truck in order to reach the jack handle. I was more scared than hurt, but won't use an OEM Toyota jack ever again.

Has anyone tried one of these telescoping bottle jacks?

I'd like to avoid that, what do you carry instead of the OEM?

my 2016 T4R had 20 miles on it . I jacked up the truck to see how this was gonna work out and if the spare would drop etc etc... the toyota jack is a POS ,,, dangerous and unstable.

I now use a 12 ton bottle jack with a 14 inch lift. I also have a short bottle jack 10 ton 6inch to 9 inch so I can lift the front wheel off the ground with out jacking on the frame I jack up the front wheels on the lower control arm much safer ...vehicle is level when the front wheel comes off the ground so less apt to roll etc...also I carry wheel chocks to hold the vehicle .

I also found that I had to get a screw driver to get the jack to work which was not supplied , thanks Toyota .

I bought a 12 ton bottle jack at an auto parts store in Memphis so I'd have one for the trip home. I still have it but haven't used it other than testing it to see if it would fit and work.

I haven't purchased another one for the 4Runner yet. When we went on our road trip in 2015 I packed the new Tundra jack.

I've had two of those Harbor Freight bottle jacks fail on me. One was leaking out of the box and the replacement failed after a short while. I have a Pittsburg 3 ton aluminum floor jack that's been great, but I would not trust their stand alone bottle jacks for the life of me.

Summit Racing has a bunch of nice bottle jacks. I've got a Crafstmen brand from circa 1997 that has never failed but I'm not sure if they're the same as they used to be with all he transitions going on over there.

Question (and be honest):
How many have had a flat tire (on Highway only) in the past 10 years? Not me.
