Am I doing the right thing selling my 4th Gen to go 5th Gen

I know the subjects been beat to death but I just got home from looking at 2012 Trail Edition. It's got 129k on the clock and a near perfect maintenance record from 2 local toyota dealerships. Florida truck. Has some minor damage to left rear bumper but otherwise straight. No Nav and no KDSS but I'm not a hardcore off-roader anyway. Agreed on $14k.

Would mean selling my 06 SR5 2WD that has 227k on the clock. It's paid for and been an incredibly reliable truck. Love everything about it but just think the miles are getting a little high.

I’m sure you’ll get lots of opinions, but sounds like a safe move, not a bad price either. It’s essentially the same motor but with a few tweaks to improve reliability.. very much the same vehicle just a little bigger. I’d say go for it if you’re in the position. 227k miles is getting up there, even if it is a Toyota. I’d still try to negotiate a lower price.

You may want to search for threads on “best upgrades” for 5th gens.. sound deadening the doors, a speaker upgrade, and maybe a sprint booster are usually at the top of the list, would make for a very enjoyable ride. I had a 2013 TE for awhile, sold it to my pops, and it’s a solid vehicle. He’s retired in Mexico and it’s serving him well as a daily driver on rough roads.

So they offer 14 for the 06 and the 12? either way go with your gut. If you can swing the $$, go for it!

Thanks. Never heard of a Sprint booster but I'll look it up.

On my 06 I installed a set of 2014 blue boot Bilstiens (trd?) Along with the 2014 springs and a few spacers. The ride improvement was incredible. I'd like the same ride in this 2012 so I'm busy searching that too.

We have a 08 4Runner with the V8 and a 17 Pro. The 5th gen definitely has more comfy seats. We take it on road trips not involving off-road type activities (it’s stock, the 08 is built). I definitely like my 08 more outside of the seats. The power is just super nice to have. If you have V6 in your 4th gen though I suppose it’s a wash. Yours is 2wd though, not sure if you need the 4wd but that could be a selling point.

They each have there ups and downs. If your 4th gen is in good shape with no issues then I would keep it and not take on a car payment. This thread is no different then the “what oil is best” argument though. Everyone will have different opinions

i think its good deal. the 4wd will hold its value and depreciate very little over the years.

do a front end conversion and you will look like a 2020 model.

I think that's actually a good move. 100k less miles, newer truck, 4wd, and at $14k that's actually a really good deal. If it's all up to date on maintenance it would be VERY tempting.

What is the NADA on your 2006? You could probably get anywhere from 6-8k for it.

The 10-13 MY Trail editions are some of the best looking and that aqua blue is very unique. IMO doing a 2014+ front end conversion ruins it. Plus to even do the conversion you need to get it paint matched.

Honestly, 14k for that 4R is a great deal. Especially that you said it has all the service records. If it wasn't in a wreck I think it's a score! You would be getting a truck with 100k less mileage and added 4WD. I also think the 10-13 trails are the best looking 4R's. For the price you can probably get for your truck it isn't a huge investment. I say if it's not overextending you financially go for it!

very good deal, especially for a hard-to-find color.

Too good to be true?

I was gonna recommend that you wait but then i did some research and saw that it looks like a great deal. I searched carfax.com and only found a couple of 2011's for $17k.

If i were you i would compare the service history to the carfax report and of course have a mechanic check it out. This will give you peace of mind.

FYI-
I also jumped from a 4th to 5th gen and there were pros & cons (for me). My 4th gen was awesome. I loved the ability to roll down the rear window with the key fob. I also like the way the rear door sealed shut on its own if it wasn't closed properly. These were a couple of things i wish the 5th gen had. My 4th gen was also a 2wd and i always wished i had gotten a 4wd. WHen it came time to trade in, i made sure to get everything i wanted in my 5th gen which was just 4wd and sunroof.

Do your due diligence.

Congrats!

I think you'll like the 4wd. Lots of more places to explore.
