Personally I usually subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" theory.

That being said, I generally have a few spare parts on hand in case it does fail.
And that's mostly so I don't have to wait on the d@mn parts counter to order in stuff I need on a Friday night holiday weekend.
If it fails you can bet it will be when no one can get you the parts you need in a timely manner.

Starter, Alternator, water pump, belts, etc. Normal wear items, nothing like fuel pump assemblies, etc.

Perhaps I should toss the reliability logic and decided to go with this scoring method?

Component replacement scores based on ease of access levels
1 Driveway in an afternoon
2 Takes time, may take a special tool
3 Hard to find special tools/lift needed if you're over 35 (would get towed rather than roadside repair)

The fuel unit assembly kills two birds with one stone (pump and sending unit) and scores a level 3 on the accessibility index.

Other level 3s?

I'm just impressed at these higher mileage 4R's with such few problems! That is the big reason I bought mine.

2013 TE purchased Feb 2019 with 79.5k on the clock, right now I'm at 92.5k.

I thought that was high, but wow, you guys have me beat!

One thing that really annoys me about mine is the noisy engine. I'm told its normal, and read about it on here as being normal.

Do you higher mileage guys have that clattering or ticking noise at idle, and if so, has it gotten worse with age?

There was a thread recently on this topic. IIRC consensus seemed to be that it’s normal even in newer 5th gens.

Embrace the noisy engine and ticking. It's all good.

Long story, but my cousin has a crane business and had three Hummer H3s in 2016 she replaced with Silverados for her fleet. She sold one H3 to Carmax with like 310K on it (5 cylinder one), kept one, and sold me the other, a 2008 H3 Alpha (5.3L V8) with 277K. At the time the trans/differentials had been replaced at 200K, and it had brand new tires on it, but it needed several things. Since my acquisition three years ago, I have put about 3K into it: brakes, rear main seal, fluids, tune up, and a bunch of other random things. She's at about 299K now. I really should sell it (2020 TRD Pro OTW), but I like it too much, and it's not worth anything. There will come a point where I no longer put money in it, but I enjoy seeing how long I can get it to last. However, OP, I have no plans to swap an engine or anything when it goes. Ill just find a low mileage one if I want another. Plus, it still looks and runs really good, more like a 100K than a 300K vehicle. Basically, that's a long winded way of saying keep up with your fluid changes and follow factory intervals for tune ups/filters and what not. Maybe be more conservative because of the mileage, and use synthetic fluids. Also, be nice to the tranny. No brake torquing!

My brand new engine was so bad at clicking I brought it in for a service call and the tech started other 4runners and they were the same. Looks like they have the material sciance down. Valves on diesels are so loud I cant talk aroung them, but they get 1 Million miles of service on those engines. I set the valve lash on my old lx470 at 250,000 mi and it used metal pucks that were different sizes that swap in and out to get the correct clearance. I need to buy a paper factory maintenance manual.

Slightly rough idle is attributed to cam selection that gives the engine its kick during acceleration. I also noticed that on delivery too, it runs well!

2014 SR 5, purchased new in September 2014, 250K miles. No major parts failures. Replaced brake rotors and pads twice. Replaced shocks. Just finished changing differential and transfer case fluids and need to do another transmission flush, but waiting for warmer weather.
