My 2016 Trail does the creep as well. Tally another experience to lead this into a common issue.
The reason this may feel different is likely that the "booster" on these is a motor/pump vs an actual vacuum booster. So a lot of electronics are involved to assist in braking.
That all being said, you may have to take the dive and throw a bunch of money to see what happens... And by all means, please inform us all so we know.

Thanks for some good advice and discussions. Looks like finding some good pads is a good start.

We have two 5th gens. They each felt like an Air bubble was in the system. Time and a panic stop caused the brakes to work way better.

It honestly took me 4-5 years to get fully used to them. Rent another car for a week and you’ll be right back where you started. I use neutral a lot. On the plus side they’ve lasted me 9 years so far and saved me from disaster a couple times.

As a recent 4Runner owner I will say the brakes actually caught me off guard with how well they gripped, the one item that I did not expect though was the nose dive. After reading some other peoples impressions it seems this is common and many upgrade to the Bilstien 5100 shocks to eliminate that nose dive. If you were to do any upgrade to the 4Runner itself I would say look into better pads and braided brake lines and new/better fluid. I will note though after about 3 days I have noticed my braking vastly improve as I am more aware of the size and distances needed to make a typical stop that my smaller 04 frontier would be able to do.

I'm glad you asked this. I am experiencing the exact same thing on the Certified used 4runner I just purchased. It was making me feel something wasn't quite right and was quite surprising at lights to realize "Hey! I'm moving!' despite having the pedal depressed. I feel like I have to mash it pretty hard to stay stopped. I do also have a vibration in the brake pedal any time it's depressed, but that's another thread... The break accumulator according to the Toyota parts schematic vibrates like crazy through in to the brake pedal any time the brake is pressed, and then again if you press harder, even when parked......

I'm at 180,000 miles in my 2012 and just put my third set of OEM pads on last weekend. Gotta say I've been real happy with the braking performance and the toyota pads and calipers. The only times I have nose dived was when I deserved it for not paying attention and slamming on the brakes and maybe twice when something ran out in front of me. Truck stopped great every time, anti lock brakes work great if you stay on the pedal. Getting used to the truck and feel have a lot to do with it. Jusy my .02

Akebono Premium pads with centric premium rotors was a total fix for me. Braking is day and night improvement. I don't get the air bubble feeling at 50% pedal press and its very consistent with the pressure put on the pedal till stop. I recommend.

There are several models of those pads. Can you link me to the ones you are talking about?

Have you ever owned trucks or large SUVs before? They are all I’ve had and I don’t notice any difference between the 4Runner and other vehicles I’ve had. I think the brakes are great and have never had it creep.

Napa has them labeled online as the Performance pad- when you get them in hand its the Premium. Bout $89 each end.
I'd try this first then see how it goes.

Thanks. I'll see about getting some myself. Here is a better deal but Amazon says they don't fit 4runner. hmm Edit: Looked it up on Napa, and the part # matches for 4Runner. Amazon is wrong then. But good price for sure.
