I am glad someone brought this question up. My first "truck" and I have the same issue. Although I learned real fast not to slide my butt off the seat - a real nut crusher. And the seat fabric is really going to wear fast. I have the predator steps and that helps somewhat, but they don't seem to be in the right place for a graceful exit.

I'm short, about 5'6, (it's not as dramatic as I'm putting it) but I grab the steering wheel with my right hand, slide a bit to the left, left foot down to the running board, right foot right down to the ground and KIM (Keep It Moving). Your own way can seem dramatic when you look into it without context, but your way is your way and it becomes second nature.

My kids, 7 and 4, don't seem to have a problem hopping from the seat to the ground... Running boards would probably get in the way. The sliders do leave a little dirt if you aren't thinking about them and brush up against them on the way down.

Go with "feet first" and you should be good, unless you forgot to unbuckle your seat belt.

Easy
1) Place hand over door handle to unlock
2) Yell at the kids
3) Open the door and lean in, threatening the kids
4) Pivot and lift right leg, then slide in
5) Glare at kids through rearview mirror
6) Pull in left leg and pull on seatbelt
7) Tries to remember threats just given to kids, maybe I should write these down
8)

Wait, is this getting in or getting out?

kinda short...5-8 here

Using the steering wheel, after opening the door, i make a full quarter turn to the left, then with my legs out from under the steering wheel, i just slide down the side to the ground.

Im just glad this post got some traction for some other folks as well! After living on Jeep forums and seeing "will my Dana 35 survive 35's for the 1000th time" I have firmly taken to heart there are no dumb questions hence why i made the post.

I do agree with what someone mentioned the step does seem at a awkward height which I am pretty sure is what has been throwing me off. Currently looking at a set of sliders when the budget allows so I will just deal with what I have now. They are great to use getting in but the out part not so much. Thank you everyone who took the time to answer my questions much appreciated!

I have a weird process in tighter spots - I back into the garage where my door opens into a wall that has shit hanging from it so space is limited. I park over as far as I can to give my wife/kid as much space as possible. I don't want to slide out of the seat because I don't want to destroy the seat bolsters so when I get out of the 4runner in a tighter spot.

So here's my process that I've evolved over the months lol it all revolves around trying not to wear my seat bolsters down prematurely i.e. the chair is lava

1) Open door with left hand
2) Right hand on wheel -nicer if steering lock is engaged but not necessary
3) Left foot on side step
4) Tuck my right foot sorta under me
5) Using my right leg to give me upward force and my right hand on the steering wheel to give me forward force, I'll pull myself up and forward so my ass is off the seat and maintain a bit of a squat with my right leg. This will be the last time my ass touches the seat in the entire process.
6) I'll lean myself back such that my back will rest against the weather stripping on the b pillar; it's a dense rubber so ain't no thing.
7) With left foot providing backward force and right hand providing forward force, transition right foot on to the scuff plate. Left hand is still on the door preventing it from opening into anything. Left foot is on the side step, right foot is on the scuff plate, and back is leaning against the b pillar. Think of it as a wall-squat position -ass still not touching the seat.
8) With my back against the b pillar, my right foot bearing almost entire all my weight, and my right hand still holding onto the steering wheel for additional balance, I'll can do a controlled squat to lower my left foot onto the ground.
9) Now you're home-free and warmed up to do a bunch of squats.

I'll have to try that technique. May have to print that post to ensure I am doing everything correctly. LOL
