Used TRD Pro or new TRD OR

I found what seems like a pretty good deal to me on a used 2015 TRD Pro with 38k miles. I haven't been considering a TRD Pro as an option, as they are typically out of my price range. I've got a 2004 SE, and a pretty good knowledge of the 4th gen from the forum, but I had some questions for you 5th gen guys.

1. What are the biggest upgrades to the TRD Pro between 2015 and 2019? I know the 2020 is coming with car play and the safety tech, but I really don't know much about what else has changed since 2015.

2. Opinions on buying a 2015 TRD Pro with 38k miles vs a new (2019) TRD Off Road base? The prices are comparable.

3. Are there any 5th gen guys who have regretted getting rid of their 4th gen? I'm at that crossroads where I need to decide between putting some money into my 2004 to get it back up to speed or cut my losses and move on. It's been the best vehicle i've ever owned, but I don't want it to become a money pit. I have a VW GTI as my main commuter car, so my '04 is mainly used on weekends for Home Depot trips and on longer trips with the dog and family. If I end up getting rid of the '04, I'll also trade in my GTI, and my 5th gen will be my only car.

Any input would be appreciated. With the end of the model year deals going on right now, I'm feeling like I need to make a decision.

If you are going to mod it I think the OR is a better choice, and the platinum vsa with zero deductible up to 10yr 125k is super reasonable using the dealer referenced through the extended warranty thread.

Been a long time since I posted. I have a TRD Pro. I’d say, honestly, you can’t go wrong either way. Personally, if that’s the choice I had to make, I’d go new TRD Off Road Base. What would I miss?
1. Auto Headlights, lazy quality of life add on.
2. I love my TRD Pro wheels and Front end.
3. I appreciate the off-road suspension I have but think the standard suspend is probably fine for the amount and intensity of the off-roading I get around to doing.
4. Ditto on the off-road tires I got instead of the highway tires on the TRD off road.

Buying new (if you wait to 2020) will give you access to Apple car play. I don’t think that Limited and TRD Pro exclusive, is it? The TRD Off Road base trim is what the TRD Pro is based on, anyway, I think. No KDSS available on that trim. May be no sunroof.
Plus, buying new gets the full length of the warranty, free service, and the fun of being the one that puts all the miles on and you know every ding, dent and scratch on her.

Prices of each?

If the PRO is cheaper, as i suspect it would be...i'd go with that one. the exclusivity of it would be the bend for me.

i bought my '14 SR5 with 20K miles on it used for $28k back in 2014 specifically because of the price of a current-model-used vehicle being completely convincing.

Additionally, as mentioned, you should also be getting a warranty on the '15 PRO as well. Add on an extended warranty and i dont think you can go wrong there...

but both will be great choices.

I have a 19' Pro, and decided on it after looking at a couple older TRD Off Roads and a Nightshade.

If I had to do it again I'd go new either way, for the Pro again or opting for a new OR/ORP. Rightly said, you know every ding/scratch/mile that's been on it.

The only real advantage of the Pro, used or otherwise, is the exclusive design elements and the already upgraded suspension/wheels/tires.

Nonetheless, I'm pretty confident that any used Off Road will suit you just fine: after all, it's Toyota reliability and capability.

Do you want KDSS?

I'd go new OR. The Pro is mostly appearance parts and now fox shocks (the 2015 Pro has essentially non-adjustable 6112/5120 bilstein shocks). The new OR will have more creature comforts, radar cruise, etc. that the '15 Pro will not. It also can be had with KDSS which the Pro can't. IMO KDSS is better than the bilstein shocks without question and also better than the fox shocks, but that's a closer call.

If you're looking at used vehicles - you should at least take a test drive in a GX460. They're typically cheaper or the same used as a comparable year 4Runner and have a lot of nice upgrades. They are not going to be as capable off road due to low hanging plastics and extra weight, but if you're not planning on doing the harder trails - they offer a lot of nice highway comfort features.

They put a new roof rack (I don't like it) on the 2019 TRD Pro, that's about it other than a new color and a slight change in display between 2014 and 2017 (also changed on the TRD OR), not sure which year they changed it. So like when you put it in rock sand mode etc the display shows up top by the clock but in my 2017 it shows down by the speedometer. Not much of a difference though.

TRD OR (as opposed to the ORP) doesn't have the fake leather. I like the fake leather since I have kids, spills don't soak in. Not sure if you can get the sliding rear cargo in a non-Premium TRD OR but that is a must for me. If you don't like the cloth seats you can always get Katskins leather which is excellent from the ones I have seen.

I'd go new. TRD Pro's are overpriced. 2019 ORP may be in your affordability range if you negotiate real good. Check the topic on new pricing, there are some that are getting great deals.

Looking towards the future at resale value, it would tell you the Pro is more sought after, and would likely hold its value better than the newer model. If its one of the limited colors, even more so.
That being said, there are a bunch of updates on the new model that you may prefer..

Used TRD Pro or new TRD OR

go new and go TRD Off-Road...

...speaking as someone who got a new TRD Off-Road back in 2018

I was able to negotiate having the Pro Grille installed before it even got to the dealer "at port" at no extra charge. I also had them put on the TRD Pro Suspension with the red springs and Bilstein shocks a la carte for 1500$. Pics in my garage

I started negotiations at the price of a base SR5 and I got out the door for under 40K...tax, tag, and title.

Goodluck!
