Comparing my new '20 Tundra to my previous '19 4Runner

About a week ago I traded my ’19 4Runner Limited 4wd for a ’20 Tundra Platinum 4wd. I have owned trucks most of my life and really missed the bed as well as the space of a full-size truck.

I thought some of you might be interested in some of the things I have noticed between the two vehicles. I will not talk about the new head unit or better gauge cluster since these things are also present on the ’20 4Runner.

The first thing I noticed were the seats. The 4Runner seats have better bolstering and fit my 6’1” 185lbs body better. The wider seats of the Tundra don’t have much lateral support. However, the Tundra seats offer adjustable thigh support and have better flow when using the ventilated seat function. Both the Tundra and 4Runner seat heating is lacking compared to other vehicles I have owned.

The storage in the Tundra is better than the 4Runner for things I use regularly. This is due mostly to the huge center console. I have used the OCD organizers with trays in both vehicles. I can fit a ton of stuff in the Tundra center console that I had previously stored in a box in the back of the 4Runner. I did find the door pockets on the 4Runner easier to access, even though the Tundra has bigger pockets, due to the lower seats and larger gap. I really wish the Tundra had under seat storage in the back like I had in some previous domestic trucks.

There are a lot of little things that the 4Runner has that are missing on the Tundra. There is no footwell lighting in the Platinum. There is also no little LED to shine down on center console. While the Tundra does have front and back parking sensors, the button is in a terrible place so you can’t see the light to tell if they are on, and if you cycle them on and off there is not a message on the dash like there is on the 4Runner. Only the front two window have auto up/down unlike the 4Runner which had them for all windows including the rear cargo area. The lack of LED taillights seems strange in this day and age on a premium level full-size truck. Finally, the 2020 Tundra has ditched the mast antenna in favor of a shark fin, but it is not painted to match like on the 4Runner.

The Tundra does have a few useful features that are missing from the 4Runner. I really like the power tilt/telescoping steering wheel that will get out of way when you turn off the truck. I also like the power fold mirrors, but these are probably less useful on the smaller 4Runner. The outside mirrors also auto dim which is nice when someone is behind you with aftermarket LED bulbs in stock reflector housings is riding your bumper. The automatic climate control seems more accurate in the Tundra as well. Finally, I really like the LED headlights and fog lights.

Overall, I’m happy with the new truck. My teenage boys fit much better in the back seat. Also, the more powerful engine and large full tank are a plus for me. The build quality is probably not as good as the 4Runner, but it is at least as good as the recent Fords and GMCs I have owned.

I think that's going to be my next vehicle once my wife's v8 4th gen dies. I'll give her my 4runner and pick up a Tundra. Hoping to buy an RV or boat so gonna need some jam to tow some shit. Also be easier to go dirt biking.

I completely agree. I just know that the topic comes up from time to time when folks start thinking about a larger vehicle so I thought I would share my observations.

I didn't actually trade it in. I own a small business and I gave the 4Runner to a new employee.

I test drove a 18' Tundra LTD and felt the same about the seats. The bolstering was terrible and not supportive on the side. Although I'm only 5'7" 150lbs. I feel like the seats are were very flat, the length was a little long for me so the cushion would always hit the back of my knees. I guess that's because I'm a shorty. Honestly I feel the seats were designed for someone who weights 250+ lbs with a wide rear end. TBH the truck was a little big for me in all aspects. I'd prefer the Tacoma personally but really do hate the 3.5L V6 in it.
